Q1 W7 – WORKSHEET

Name:__________________________________Grade/Section:_______________

Topic: Subtracting Numbers without and with regrouping.

Learning Competency: Subtracts 3-to 4-digit numbers from 3- to 4-digit

numbers without and with regrouping.
M3NS-lg-32.6
Concept/Short Input:
How do we subtract 3-to 4-digit numbers without regrouping?
When subtracting numbers, align the digits according to their place
values.
Subtract starting from the ones, then the tens and so on up to the digits
in the highest place values.
Example:
Read and understand to solve the problem.

Mercy loves to read. One morning after she finished her household
chores, she started to read a book with 253 pages. After a week, she was
able to finish reading 131 pages. How many more pages does she need to
read to finish the book?
Reminder: The importance of proper alignment of values.
Subtraction is done by subtracting the values from right to left.
C.
253 = 200 + 50 + 3 253 = 200 + 50 + 3
- 131 = 100 + 30 + 1 - 131 = 100 + 30 + 1
2 100 + 20 + 2 = 122
B.
253 = 200 + 50 + 3
131 = 100 + 30 + 1
20 + 2
Short way of subtracting numbers:
Which digits in the ones place? Tens place? Hundreds place?

(subtract first the ones)

(Subtract the tens)
(Subtract the hundreds
Did we get the same answer in each method?
Therefore, Mercy still needs to read 122 pages to finish the
book.
How do we check if our answer is correct? What part of
subtraction will you add?

Solution: Checking:
253 – minuend 122 - difference
131- subtrahend + 131 - subtrahend
122 – difference 253 - minuend

Activity 1 – A. Choose two numbers on the right whose difference is the number in
the box on the left. Add the two numbers.

1. Using the digits 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9, form a subtraction sentence that gives a
difference of 741.

⮚ Subtracting Numbers with Regrouping

⮚ Concept/Short Input
● Solve the problem.
Two hundred twenty-nine mahogany seedlings were brought to the
student’ campsite for the tree planting activity. There were 241 scouters
in the camp. How many of them will not have a seedling to plant?
● What operation or process do we use when we take away things?
(Subtraction}
● How will you write the number sentence for this problem?
● Which will be the minuend? The subtrahend?
241 – 229 = n
Show the process using the expanded form.
241 = 200 + 40 +1
- 229 = 200 + 20 +9

Reminder: The importance of proper alignment of values.

Subtraction is done by subtracting the values from right to left.

241 =200 + 40 + 1 Subtract first the least values. Can you

- 200 = 200 + 20 + 9 Can you get 9 from 1? Where
borrow so that it will have more ones?
What will you do with 40? How will
regroup it?
241 = 200 + (30 + 10) + 1 What will happen now to 10 and 1?
-229 = 200 = 200 + 20 + 9 (Add them.) So, how many ones do
You have now? Can you now get 9
From it? What is the difference?

241 = 200 + 30 + 1 (10 + 1) Can we now subtract the next bigger

-229 = 200 + 20 + 9 value? Can you get 20 from 30? What
is the difference?

241 = 200 + 30 + 11 What about the number with the

-229 = 200 + 20 + 9 biggest value? Can we subtract 200
2 from 200? What is the answer?

241 = 200 + 30 + 11
-229 = 200 + 20 + 9
10 + 2

241 = 200 + 30 + 11
-229 = 200 + 20 + 9
0 + 10 + 2 = 12

⮚ Short way of subtracting numbers.

⮚ The importance of writing the numbers with the same place values in the
same column. Show the steps.

Hundreds Tens Ones

2 4 1
2 2 9

In what place value are we going to start subtracting? (subtract first the ones.)
What did you notice about the numbers? Can you get 9 ones from 1 ones? In what
place value are you going to borrow?
Regroup the tens as 3 tens + 1 tens. Then, get 1 tens and add it to the ones place.
How many ones are there in 1 tens? So, how many ones are there in all?

Tens Ones
2 3 4 10 + 1
2 2 9

Hundreds Tens Ones

Did we get the same answer in each method?

Therefore, 12 scouters will not have a seedling to plant.
What do you think will the 12 scouters do if they don’t have any seedling to
Plant?
How do we check if our answer is correct? What part of the subtraction sentence
will you add?
Solution: Checking:
3 11
- 241 12
229 + 229

numbers on the top row.

⮚ Topic: Estimating the Differences:

⮚ Learning Competency: Estimates the difference of two numbers with
three to four digits with reasonable results. M3NS-lh-36
⮚ How do we estimate the difference of two numbers with three to four
digits?
❖ To estimate the difference of two numbers, round off the both
numbers to their highest place value then subtract.
Example:
Round off to the highest possible place value
4 943 rounds off to 5 000 --------- 5 000
-3 225 rounds off to 3 000 --------- 3 000
2 000

Round off to the next lower place value

4 943 rounds off to 4 900 -------- 4 900
-3 225 rounds off to 3 200 -------- 3 200
1 700

Actual Difference
4 943
-3 225
1 718 1 700
