Class our lesson for today is about Number
and Number Sense: Comparing numbers up

E. DISCUSSION.

But before we proceed, I want you to take

note of this. In comparing numbers there are
symbols that we have to use these symbol >,
means greater than, these < means less than
, and these = means equal.

Is that clear?
Yes, Sir.
What does it mean again <?
Less than Sir!
How about this one?
Equal Sir.
How about this one?
Greater than Sir!
Very Good!

How many digits do you see?

The digits are 4 Sir.

And What is the greatest place value?
Thousands Sir.
Very Good!

Now look at the board

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

2 1 9 5

2 2 6 4

In comparing numbers we begin from right

to left. So it means?
We begin from thousand to ones.

Brilliant!

Class is the thousand the same value?

How about the hundreds? Yes Sir!

2 is greater than 1 Sir.

Very Good!

We conclude that 2145 is ---------than 2264?

What symbols we should use?

The symbol is the less than (<) symbol

Excellent class! Sir!

Now do you want another example?

Ok! Let us compare this number.

54,567 and 56, 398 Yes sir.
What does it mean? Sir, it is 5 digits!

Very well! It means it is in ten thousand place.

And where do we begin compare?

Do the thousands are the same? From left to right Sir.

How about thousand Yes Sir!

They are also the same Sir!

Now let us proceed to the hundred, what did

you notice? 5 is greater than 3 Sir!

All right! 5 is greater than 3 so

56, 567 is ---------- than

56, 348 what symbol do we use?

Very Good! The greater than (>) symbol Sir.

Is there any question or clarifications?

Sir I’m still confusing on how to use

relational symbols.

Okay pupils, always remember that, if where

the arrow pointed those are the lesser value.

Is that clear?

F. GENERALIZATION Clear Sir.

Again class how do we compare numbers?

Sir ? To compare numbers, we compare

first the digits in the highest place value.

If it is equal, go to the next place value

and if they are not, determine the
number which is greater or lesser
What symbols do we you use?

Sir? We use the symbol

<
< for “ Less than”
> > for “Greater than”
= = for “Equal”
