B. Developmental Activities

a. Motivation

Have you ever experience shopping in the

store?

I have a friend his name is Aldrin. One day, he

went to the store to buy school supplies his money is
only ₱ 150, but he wants to buy paper worth of ₱
30.55, book ₱ 99.75, ball pen ₱ 26.65, and eraser ₱
10.85. On his estimation, his money is not enough
that’s why he can’t buy ball pen.

Aldrin can’t estimate his money that’s why he

can’t get all the items.

How estimation is very important?

Estimation is very important to
Yes, Vhullete? prevent shortening of money in our
needs.

Do you think Aldrin’s money is enough to buy

all the items? No his money is not enough
because it is ₱ 150 only.
Yes, Dominic?

Very Good!

c. Discussion

Let’s go back to the story.

₱ 30.55
How much is the price of paper?

Yes, Kenneth?

Very good!

When you round off the price of paper to the 31

nearest whole number, what is the answer?
Yes, Vhullete?

What Aldrin can do, to know if his money is He estimate the total cost of the
enough? school supplies.

Yes, Stephanie?
Very Good!

What we need to do before we estimate sums When we estimate sums or

and difference? differences, we round off the
decimals into the nearest whole
Yes, Lester? number.

When you round off to the nearest whole

number the prices of the school supplies it will
become?
Round off the price of paper into the nearest
whole number?
it will become ₱31
Yes, Jhyran?

Very Good!

How about the book?

it will become ₱100
Yes, Lester?

Very Good!

How about the ball pen?

it will become ₱27
Yes, Fritchie?

Very Good!

How about the eraser?

it will become ₱11
Yes, Nikki?

Very Good!

Let us see the prices before we estimate the

total sum of the items.

30.35 – 31
99.75 – 100
10.85 – 11
26.75 – 27

What is the operation to be use in finding the

sum? Addition
Yes, Wystan?

Very Good!

How much is the total of the items Aldrin wants to

buy? Who wants to solve? 31 + 100 + 11 + 27 = 169

In ₱150 budget Aldrin can buy only book, paper, and

eraser.

Let’s try this!

Aling Anna sell chocolate in her store with the

different prices.

The prices are:

A B
₱₱ ₱

C D
₱ ₱
E F

₱ ₱
G H

What is the estimated amount of chocolates A,

B, C, and D?
Round off the price of chocolates
What are we going to do? A, B, C, and D to the nearest whole
number.
Yes, Catharine?

Very Good!

When we round off the price of chocolates

A, B, C, and D the answer is.

₱9, ₱15, ₱106, and ₱7

In estimating the amount we can use addition

to find the sum.
9 + 15 + 106 +7 = 137
Who wants to estimate the amount of
chocolates A, B, C, and D? Yes, Sir!

Yes, Yestine?

Is he correct?

Very Good!

What is the estimated difference of the most

expensive and the cheapest chocolate?
₱105.95 - 106
What is the amount of the most expensive
chocolate?

Yes, Tricia?
₱8.75 – 9
How about the cheapest chocolate?

Yes, Fritchie? Subtraction

What is the operation to be use finding the 106 – 9 = 97

difference?

Yes, Gweneth?

Vhullete come here in front and subtract ₱106 to ₱9

Very Good!
₱ 105.5 - 106
What is the total amount of the most expensive
₱ 8.75 - 9
and cheapest chocolate?

How much is chocolate is the most expensive and

the cheapest chocolate?
₱ 115

₱ 89.50 - 90
What is the estimated sum of chocolate E, F, G,
₱ 43.10 - 43
and H?

Aerold round off the price of each chocolate and

estimate the sum? ₱ 193

Yes, Sir!
Tricialyn, find the estimated sum of chocolate E,
F, G, and H.

Is she correct?
We round of the digits to the
Very good! nearest whole number, and then add
or subtract.
When we estimated the sum and difference, what
are we going to do?

Yes, Vhullete?
Yes, Sir!

Very good!
107
Do you know how to estimate sum and difference?

Very good!
Yes, Sir!
Kenneth, round off 106.85 to the nearest whole
number.
Very good!

Do you understand the lesson?

We round off the digits to the

nearest whole number, then add or
subtract

d. Application

We will having a group activity. I'm going to

group you into two groups.
The first group will be the row 1, and the second
group will be the row 2.
Each group will receive the road map question
and envelope. In the road map question you are
going to estimate the sum and difference of the
question. For the group 1 and group 2 you are going
to get the answer inside the envelope and paste it on
the road map questionn. The first group who will
finish answering will be the winner.
Before we start there are some reminders:
Each member need to participate in our group
activity
The most rowdy and noisy group will be out of
the game, and they are consider as the looser.
