Instructional Plan (iPlan)

Learning Area: MATHEMATICS Grade Level: THREE

iPlan No.: 5 Quarter: FIRST Duration: 50mins
(Week 2; Lesson
2)
Learning Compares using relation symbols and orders in increasing or Code: M3NS – lb –
Competency/ies: decreasing order 4- to 5-digit numbers up to 10 000. 12.3

Key Concepts/  The more digits a number has, the greater is its value
Understandings  When two numbers have the same numbers of digits, we compare digits from left to right.
to be Developed Find the place value where the digits are different. The number with the larger value of the
digits is the greater number.
 To compare numbers we use the following symbols > for “greater than”, < for “less than”
and = for “equal to”
 After comparing numbers in a set, they can be arranged in increasing or decreasing order.
Learning  Compare numbers up to 10 000 using relation symbols.
Objectives:  Use the symbols >, < or =
 Order numbers up to 1 000 in increasing or decreasing.
 Show speed and accuracy when working activity.
 Practice the habit of being honest.
Resources Flats, longs and squares, picture, chart tables and activity card.
Needed: Teacher’s Guide in Mathematics pp. 21 - 24, Math LM pp. 23 – 27
Methodology
Introductory 1. Drill:
Activity Conduct a drill showing 2 sets of pictures or real objects to pupils.
( 5 minutes) Have them count the number of objects in its picture and tell which of the sets has more or
less number.
2. Review:
Have pupils tell the missing number for each blank.
1.) 616_____618_____620_____622
2.) 357_____359_____361_____363
3. Motivation:
Lead pupils in playing a game. Have theme group themselves according to the following.
 Color of their dress.
 First letter of their names.
Ask: What color of the dresses has the most number? The least?
Compare the numbers.
Activity 1. Have pupils look at the picture on the LM. Have them read the test about Sally and Carmy.
( 10 minutes) A. Show the chart and explain the data.
Best Friends Number of Rubber Bands Collected
Sally 1 637
Carmy 1 259

Ask: How many rubber bands did Sally collects?

Who collected more rubber bands?
2. A. Let the pupils compare the two numbers by their digits.
The more digits a number has, the greater is the value.
Introduce the symbol > for “greater than”,< “less than”, and = for “equal to”
B. Present another way of comparing the numbers by using number line

1 000 1 100 1 200 1 300 1 400 1 500 1 600 1 700 1 800 1 900 2 000

Tell pupils to read the numbers on the given segment of the number line
Ask: What is the leftmost number in the given segment of the number line? The
rightmost?
Which number is greater? Witch number is lesser?
If we are going to arrange those numbers in increasing order, what number will be in
first?
How about in decreasing order, how will you order the two?
 Remind the pupils that when the numbers are arranged in decreasing order, the
arrangement starts with the greatest number and ends with the least number.
 When the numbers are arranged in increasing order with the least number and ends
with the greatest number.
 Give another example.

3. Performing the activity (group the pupils in pairs)

Tell the pupils to make a posters that show the meaning of <, > and =.

2nd Activity: Group Activity

Give each group sets of number and let them arrange the numbers in increasing or decreasing
order.
Analysis Processing the activity (the teacher will give additional input to pupils)
( 3 minutes) Ask:
1. In the activity, what symbols did you use to show the comparison between two
numbers?
2. How do we arrange number in increasing order?
3. How do we arrange number in decreasing order?
Abstraction Teacher asks the following:
( 3 minutes) 1. How do we compare numbers?
2. What symbols do we use in comparing numbers?
3. How can you say that the numbers were arranged in increasing order? In decreasing
order?
Application Differentiated Activity
( 10 minutes) Group 1: Complete the number sentence by comparing numbers.
Group 2: Think of 4 sets of numbers then arrange it in increasing order
Group 3: Compare the numbers listed on the activity sheet.
Group 4: Arrange the given numbers in decreasing order.
Assessment A. Compare the numbers. Use >, < or = in the blank.
( 10 minutes) 1.) 3 860 _________ 5 487
2.) 5 863 _________ 7 634
3.) .2 7 7 _________ 7 321
4.) 7 876 _________ 6 787
5.) 2 346 _________ 2 346
B. Write the correct symbol in the blank to make the statement true.
1.) 8 691 ________ 8 961
2.) 3 287 _______ 3 827
3.) 3 600 ________ 3 000 + 600 + 0 + 0
4.) 4 993________ 4 939
5.) 500 ________ 400 + 90 + 10
C. These are the school population of four elementary schools .Arrange them in increasing
order.
3 427 2 564 1 976 2 839
D. Write the following numbers in the ladder box in decreasing order.
1.) 6 327 4 327 8 543 3 258 1 765

Assignment A. Use <, >, = to compare the following numbers.

( 2 minutes) 1. 469 ____ 5 hundred + two tens + nine ones
2. 3 952 ______ 3 482
3. 5 044 ______ 5000 + 40 + 4
B. Identify if the following set of numbers are arranged in increasing or decreasing order.
Write Increasing if it is arranged in increasing order or Decreasing if it arranged in
decreasing order.
