A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics IV

I. Learning Objective:
Estimate the products of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 2- to 3- digit numbers with reasonable results
II. Learning Content:
Topic: Estimating the products of 3- to 4- digit numbers by 2- to 3- digit numbers
References: Mathematics Teachers Guide p. 44-47
Mathematics Learners Material p. 32 to 34
Materials: cut out, speaker, activity sheets, pictures
Value Focus: Love for Nature
III. Instructional Procedure:
A. Preliminary Procedure
1. Prayer
Everybody stand and let us pray.

2. Greetings
Good morning class!

3. Energizing Song
Class do you want to sing a song?
Nice, then let us sing the song entitled “Math Class”

Come and join our Mathematics class,

Surely you will enjoy being here with us
Mastering basic facts, Multiply and divide and then,
All being learned in easy way

Solving problems seem so many ways,

Number sentences are easy in any way
And with easy techniques make us do our best,
Modern math today is just the best for us

Were on the top of the world of solving

Down on the land of numbers learning concept by discovering
It’s the love that we found right from very-very start
Come be happy and have fun in our class…
B. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill
Each group of the class will read the following numbers and give the place value of the
underlined digit.
3, 456
23, 467
98,123
78, 675
56, 789
2. Review
Class do you want to play a game?
Great, so the player from every group will pick a number card from the box. Then, the team
rounds the number in the card to the highest place value and write the answer on the board.
The team which finishes first with the correct answer will win the game.
Round the following numbers to the highest place value.
95, 876
24, 987
4, 567
7, 685
87, 234
Ask: How do we round numbers?

3. Motivation
(show a picture of baskets full of mangoes)
Ask: Class, about how many mangoes do you think are contained in the baskets?
Explain that what they gave are just estimates. They did not actually count the number of
mangoes in the baskets?

C. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Present this situation to the class:

The garden club is selling waling-waling orchid at Php 7, 645 a pot for fund
raising. If 123 pots were sold, about how much money did the club gets?

Ask:
Class have you seen orchids? Isn’t beautiful?
What can these waling-waling orchids do to our surroundings?
Are they important to us? Why? Instill the value of love for nature.
How do you show your love for nature?
Analyze the problem:
How much does a pot of orchid plant cost?
How many pots were sold?
What phrase in the problem indicates that an estimated product is being asked for?
How do we estimate products?

2. Performing the activity

Class let us study how to estimate products
Step 1: 7645 8000 Step 2: 8000
X 123 x 100 x 100
800 000
Say: First, round the multiplicand and multiplier to the highest/greatest place value. Then,
multiply the rounded numbers.
Ask: Is there a shorter way of multiplying with terminal zeroes?
(Give more example to show pupils that to multiply numbers which are multiples of 10,
the number of zeroes in the factors are the number of zeroes in the product.)
3,986 4,000 7,214 7,000
x 523 x 500 x 891 x 900
2 000 000 3 500 000
Group Activity:
Distribute the activity sheets to each group. Tell the pupils to estimate the products.
3456 5435 7453 8456
X 48 x 356 x 456 x 45

3. Processing the activity

Let the leader of each group report on their work.
Ask:
How did you find the activity?
How did you Estimate products of 3- to 4- digit by 2- to 3- digit numbers?
Were you able to estimate the product correctly?
Before getting the product, what was the first step?
4. Reinforcing the Concept Skill
Class let us complete the table by rounding off the given factors and estimating the following
products.
Rounded Factors Estimated Product
1. 4,784 x 345 5,000 x 300 1, 500, 000
2. 9,456 x 29
3. 6,543 x 45
4. 478 x 234
5. 278 x 78
6. 4, 678 x 298
5. Generalization
How do we estimate the products of 3- to 4- digit numbers by 2- to 3- digit numbers?

IV. Estimate the products.

1. 485 2. 5,678 3. 678 4. 568 5. 7,654

x35 x 56 x 543 x 67 x 876

V. Assignment
Read and solve.
1. Will there be more or fewer zeros in the product when you multiply 30 x 800 than when you
multiply 50 x 800?
Explain:

2. How many zeros will be in the product of 500 and 700? What is the product?
