Key Concepts/ To round off numbers, follow these steps:
Understandings ● Determine the digits to be rounded off
to be Developed ● If the digit to the right of the number being rounded is 0 – 4, round down.
● If the digit to the right of the number being rounded is 5 – 9, round up.
● Change all the digits to the right of the digit to be rounded off too.
Learning ● Explain how to round off numbers to the nearest tens, nearest hundreds and nearest
Objectives: thousands.
● Solve simple problems involving rounding off numbers.
● Work cooperatively with others during group activities.
● Practice the habit of being healthy.
Resources Flash cards, number line, picture/illustration, set of numbers
Needed: Teacher’s Guide in Mathematics 3 pp. 16-20, Math Work text 3 pp. 7-8, Math LM pp. 18-23
Methodology
Introductory 1. Drill:
Activity Conduct a short drill using the flash cards. Have the pupils find the place value.
( 5 minutes) (Say the digit as the card is flashed)
Example: 7 634 (six)
4 351 (four)
2. Review:
Identifying the digit in the tens and hundreds place.
The teacher flashes some number cards with underlined digits.
The pupils will identify the place value of the underlined digit.

3. Motivation:
Motivate the pupils by showing a picture by a big crowd.
Ask: Can you tell the exact number of people watching the game?
About how many people are watching the basketball game?
● Tell them the sometimes there is no need for us to give the exact number. Instead we
just approximate/estimate how many people or things are there.
● Tell them the importance of being sports minded.
Activity 1. Presentation
( 15 minutes) Suppose it takes you 22 minutes to get home from school. Would you say it takes you
about
20 minutes or about 30 minutes to get there?

Use the number line.

20 22 30 40
50

When to round up? Find the point for 22. Is it closer to 20 or 30?
Since it is closer to the smaller number, we round it down.
So, 22 rounded to the nearest tens is 20

2. Guide the pupils to look at the pattern and discuss when to round up and down numbers
until nearest thousands.

3. Performing the Activity ( form pupils into groups )

The teacher will show 2 pairs of numbers. Each group will raise the round up or round
down flaglets based on the numbers shown by the teacher.
Analysis Teacher ask the following:
( 3 minutes) 1. How do you find the activity?
