b. Development of the lesson
1. Motivation
Rounding number song- A parody of down by Jay Sean
2. Presentation
Why do we round off numbers?
We always round off numbers to make figures easy. Rounding numbers
makes them simpler to use.
How do we round off numbers?
Add 1 to the digit in the rounding place if the number to the right is 5
above. If it is less than 5 round down or ramain the same and drop all the
digits after the rounding place.

Example 1
Annerose has 152 pairs of shoes. How many pairs of shoes did Annerose
have when rounded to the nearest tenths?
Answer
number next to rounding place
152
rounding place

2 - less than 5
5 - remain the same
2- will become 0
152 150
In this senario, the original pair of shoes is 152 . The digit in the rounding
place is 5 and the number next to it is 2. As you can see, number 2 is
less than 5 so we round 5 down so 5 will remain the same then the rest
numbers next to it will be zero. So the annswer is 150 pair of shoes.

Example 2
Your mother bought 5 kilograms of chicken for the price of 875 pesos
What is the price of the chicken when rounded to the nearest
hundredths?
Answer
number next to the rounding place

875
rounding place
7 - ranges 5 to 9
8 - will become 9
75 - will become 00
875 900

In this senario, the original price of the chicken is 875 pesos. The digit in
the rounding place is 8 and the number next to it is 7. As you can see,
number 7 ranges from numbers 5 to 9 so we round 8 up so 8 will become 9
then the rest numbers next to it will be zero. So the annswer is 900 pesos

Example 3
There are 3,456 enrolled students at Iba Elementary School. What is the total
number of the enrolled students when rounded to the nearest thousandths?
Answer
number next to the rounding place
3,456
rounding place

4 - less than 5
3- remain the same
456- will become 000
3,456 3,000

In this senario, the original total of students is 3,456. The digit in the
rounding place is 3 and the number next to it is 4. As you can see, number
4 is less than 5 so we round 3 down so 3 remain the same then the rest
numbers next to it will be zero. So the annswer is 3,000.
