There are numerous petroleum products, but fuels were mainly used in this experiment. The main
learning point of this experiment is to know the sources and uses of petroleum products. The petroleum
products were limited to several fuels because of its practical use in daily necessities, availability, and its
safety. Although there are various petroleum products to explore, some of these products are not safe to
use in the laboratory. Several of the petroleum products have health hazards when treated. For example,
asphalt produces toxic fumes when in a molten state and tar can cause cancer. However, there are still
petroleum products that can be used as alternatives for this experiment such as petrochemicals and
paraffin wax. Nevertheless, hydrocarbons are generally combustible or flammable and may possibly
irritate the skin thus whatever the petroleum product used in the experiment, it is important to keep in
mind to be careful in handling the chemicals, reagents, and equipment.
