Weekly Calendar 3/30

Mon 3/30 (Day 3 12:25) Welcome Back

Adjustments and Expectations
Your Detective Notebook!

Tue 3/31 (Day 4 11:35) 5 minute mystery activity “The Missing Son” (handout
found on Myberwick along with “Discussion” board)

HW: In your Longman Anthology of Detective Fiction read

“A History of Detective Fiction” (pgs. 4-7) and “The
Amateur Detective (pgs. 25-28). Begin reading “The
Murders in the Rue Morgue” by Edgar Allan Poe (1841). I
would recommend skipping pages 55, 56, and most of 57,
and begin with the paragraph that reads, “Residing in Paris
in the spring and part of the summer in 18-…” Continue
reading though page 67 (middle). Ending point – Complete
the lengthy paragraph that begins “’We must not judge of
the means,’ said Dupin”(66) and ends “. . . by a scrutiny too
sustained, too concentrated, or too direct” (67).

In your detective notebook, record all names, key plot

points, and anything else that you sense as “material” or
may come into play as the mystery unfolds.

Wed 4/1 (Day 5 10:45) Zoom Session

Discuss the genre of detective fiction and the opening to
“Rue Morgue.”

HW: read pages 67-75 (middle). Stop where Dupin

observes, “This hair is most unusual . . .” Keep up with
your detective notebook.

Fri 4/3 (Day 7 9:25) Discussion board activity

Tue 4/7 (Day 2 8:35) Zoom Session

Wrap up “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”
“20 Rules for Writing Detective Stories” 1928
(AKA – The Rules of Fair Play)

HW: Read “The House in Goblin Wood” by John Dickinson

Carr found in your Longman’s Anthology. The story begins
on page 135, but please halt your reading on page 149
with the statement, “’She’s dead,’ answered H.M.”
This story relies heavily on dialogue rather than narrative,
so allow your notebook to record the different characters
and what we know and can infer about them. Additionally,
look for clues in the narrative that may help us with
“cause” and “motive.” Due Friday

Wed 4/8 (Day 3 12:25) 5 minute mystery “B Movie Murder.” I will send you the
case; each person must share a theory/solution. Be sure to
either support, refute, or rework one of the theories that
was offered before yours. See Discussion Board

Thu 4/9 (Day 4 11:35) You can work on your reading, which is due tomorrow.

Fri 4/10 (Day 5 10:45) Zoom Session

Discuss the clues for “The House in Goblin Wood” and
later read “the reveal”
