Catalogue of Upper Cretaceous ammonites

Work is now at an advanced stage on a revised edition of the
well-known but today entirely obsolete Fossilium Catalogus:
Ammonoidea neocretacea (Diener 1925). The new catalogue will
include taxa described and/or figured in scientific publications
and comprise three parts: (1) an index of genus-group taxa (i.e.
genera and subgenera), providing for each taxon (a) the strati-
graphic range, (b) a list of all species and subspecies assigned to
the taxon, and (c) references to publications where the taxon
appears (described and/or figured); (2) an index of species-
group taxa (i.e. species and subspecies), providing for each
taxon (a) the stratigraphic range, and (b) a list of the genera
and subgenera to which the species (or subspecies) has been
referred (described and/or figured), including pertinent biblio-
graphic references; (3) a list of publications containing descrip-
tions and/or taxonomically useful figures of Upper Cretaceous
ammonites, each entry being followed by a list of the taxa
included in the publication.
To illustrate the system chosen for the new catalogue, an
example is given below for the (sub)genus Lamnayella (1) and
the five species described under this taxon (2). As an example
of the alphabetically arranged list of publications (3), a paper
by Matsumoto is chosen.

The above arrangement has been worked out so as to satisfy the
needs that are most frequently encountered by systematic pa-
laeontologists and biostratigraphers when searching informa-
tion from the taxonomic literature. For reasons of space - and
costs - the new catalogue will be limited to described and/or
figured taxa. Thus, nomenclatorial combinations that appear
only in synonymy lists or in discussions accompanying descrip-
tions of taxa will not be included. Text-books will normally be
considered only in cases where the taxonomic contribution at
the genus-group or species-group level is obvious. The strati-
graphic information for each taxon will provide a broad age
assignment, based on data from the most recent publications.
The Editor of the Fossilium Catalogus, Dr Frank Westphal
(Tubingen), and Kugler Publications (Amstelveen) have kindly
agreed to publish the new catalogue in the series. The Ceno-
manian to Santonian part of the work is already completed;
work is now concentrating on the remaining Campanian and
Maastrichtian taxa, of which approximately two thirds are still
to be added to the catalogue. Finally, the stratigraphic data for
all taxa will be added and the whole catalogue thoroughly
cross-checked. Publication is scheduled for 1988, depending on
the amount of time that can be made available for the work.
Any suggestions concerning the catalogue are most welcome,
as are, of course, reprints or copies of papers on Upper Creta-
ceous ammonites.
