LEARNING GOALS:
Students will be able to state… “I can factor quadratic equations/expressions when the leading term, the co-
efficient ‘a,’ is greater than 1… by utilizing the X-Box method. (Procedural Knowledge)
… “I can find solve for the area of a pool by factoring. (real-world problem)
Knowledge/Skill(s)
Students will understand that… Students will be able to… Use the X-Box method
Identifying/list the greatest common factor (GCF) of terms to identify GCF’s of terms in polynomials to
will create factored polynomial expressions. transform quadratic expressions into factored form.
(Meta-Cognitive Knowledge)
Key Criteria:
Factoring polynomials worksheet.
Demonstrating knowledge of factoring through the X-box method by participating in class discussion as a
group after the “you do” segment.
Stage 3: Learning Plan
Learning Activities:
Pre-Activity:
Teacher will discuss key terms such as standard form, greatest common factor (GCF), factored form, and
quadratic expressions.
Teacher will issue warm-up problems to transition and activate prior knowledge and understanding.
Students will use FOIL method to transform a product of binomials from factored form to standard form.
Teacher will continue discussion and model the X-box method when the co-efficient is > 1.
Students will discuss their understanding of X-box method, if any by activation of prior knowledge.
Activity:
Teacher will demonstrate the X-box method through the “I do” segment of the “I do, We do, You do”
technique.
Students will follow along, take notes, and ask questions as teacher models X-box method during “We Do.”
Students will work in groups of twos or threes on designated problems through the “You Do” segment of the “I
do, We do, You do” technique for 10-15 mins.
Post-Activity:
Teacher will gauge attention of students and bring focus back to the teacher to work through problems together.
Students will discuss an additional set of moderate to difficult problems in groups and demonstrate their
comprehension by presenting their knowledge of factoring by the X-box method to the class (time permitting
and if students volunteer).
Students will complete factoring polynomials worksheet for homework.
Differentiation:
Teacher will roam the class during the “We do” (paired work) segment to help struggling students. For my ELL
students, I will pair up with them to further discuss mathematical terminology/vocab, model and demonstrate
the X-box method, and encourage them to present their knowledge of factoring polynomials. The teacher will
guide each group in their presentation (if time permits) to strengthen their confidence. The teacher will close up
presentations by discussing and reviewing each groups work problem to ensure comprehension.
