Analysis

“The Earth is what we all have in common.”

Indians alone are responsible for producing a hopping 62 million tons of waste a year
(mixed waste containing both recyclable and non-recyclable waste), with an average annual growth rate
of 4% (PIB 2016). In India, 70 percent of total plastic consumption is discarded as waste. Around 5.6
million tons per annum (TPA) of plastic waste is generated in country, which is about 15,342 tons per
day (TPD). Because of this fact both the government and environmental associations have developed
numerous methods of dealing with the problem. Waste management is that solution, a rather complex
issue that encompasses more than 20 different industries. Waste management is collection,
transportation, and disposal of garbage, sewage and other waste products.
Waste management is the process of treating solid wastes and offers variety of solutions for recycling
items that don’t belong to trash. It is about how garbage can be used as a valuable resource. Waste
management is something that each and every household and business owner in the world needs.
We must have heard the national campaign of “Swatch Bharat”. It has been taken up in India with full gusto.
In short, the main aim of Swatch Bharat or Clean India campaign is to solve the sanitation problem and
waste management in India. In our country managing waste and other related issues is a big bottleneck for
the development of our country.
How is Waste Management Done?
The disposal of the different types of solid waste is done in different ways. One of the most common ways to
dispose of the solid waste is to burn. But burning only reduces the volume of the waste and is not an
effective method to dispose of.  Landfills are another method used to dispose of the solid waste. Here
wastes are dumped in a huge pit and then covered with dirt. Even though this is seen as an alternative to
open garbage dumping and burning, landfills are not an effective solution. There is a huge possibility of
seepage of chemicals into the groundwater as well as polluting the land.

The Three R’s of Waste Management

The three R’s of waste management are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. All the waste that is generated by
humans can be classified as biodegradable waste, non-biodegradable waste, and recyclable waste. Here
sorting out the waste is the first step in efficient waste management.

Once this is done, disposing of the waste becomes quite an easy process. Segregation of waste hence is
an important aspect of managing wastes. And, segregation starts at the source, right from the point where
it is generated. This segregation helps in sorting out materials that can be recycled or reused. With this, we
can also achieve reduced waste production.

My contribution

 To work in partnership with people and groups from diverse sections of society. The focus is on ensuring equitable
and sustainable production and consumption of materials, and improved disposal of waste.
 Initiatives include research, campaigns, policy interventions, building capacity among those engaged in recycling,
and creating awareness about the need for reduced consumption and better waste management among the middle
and upper classes.
 Collaborate with non-government organisations (NGOs) and not for profit organisations as well to create
awareness among not only in the members of the society, but educating urban marginalized like wastepickers (rag
pickers) and kabaris, about the waste management.
