2. Description of the activity

Type of the activity: Individual ☒ Collaborative ☒ weeks 4

Moment of evaluation: Initial ☐ Unit 2, Intermediate: ☒ Final ☐
Delivery Environment of the activity:
Evaluative score of the activity: 110
Monitoring and evaluation environment
Starting date of the activity: Deadline of the activity:
March 13, 2020 April 08, 2020
Competence to develop:
The student applies the concepts of physics and electromagnetism, to determine the behavior
of electromagnetic wave when propagated in bounded open media, using mathematical
methods to solve application exercises.
Topics to develop:
- Propagation modes of electromagnetic waves.
- Propagation in bounded open media.
- Reflection and refraction of waves.
- Snell's Law.
Steps, phases of the learning strategy to develop
This activity called Task 2, is individual and collaborative, for its development you must
follow the 6 acts presented below:
Step 1: Explore the academic resource described in the next section of this document
"Activities to develop".
Step 2: Download the “Annex 3 - Delivery format – Task 2” found in the collaborative
learning environment in the "Activities guide and evaluation rubric – Task 2 -
Electromagnetic waves in bounded open media" folder.
Step 3: Individually, based on the exploration performed, answer the 5 questions
proposed in the next section "Activities to develop".
Step 4: Individually, based on the exploration performed, solve the 3 proposed application
exercises. You must show the procedures.
Step 5: Each student must complete the application in its individual delivery format,
verifying the requirements of the evaluation rubric.
Step 6: In the 3 days, before the closing of the activity, the group leader must gather the
delivery formats of each student and compress in a single file, which must be delivered in
the Monitoring and Evaluation Environment.
Activities to develop
For the development of this activity, explore in the Knowledge Environment, in Unit 2, the
bibliographical reference of Chen, W. (2005), on pages 519-524, Wiley, J. y Sons Ltd. (2003),
on pages 31-51 and supplement with the aids generated by the tutor within the forum, to
solve the following consultation and application exercises:

Questions: (write with your own words)

1. What are the modes of propagation of electromagnetic waves?
2. What does it mean to polarize an electromagnetic wave?
3. What is the phenomenon of total reflection of an electromagnetic wave?
4. What is the phenomenon of total refraction of an electromagnetic wave?
5. What is the purpose of Snell's Law in the study of the propagation of waves?

Application exercises:
For the development of the following exercises, note that 𝐺𝐺 corresponds to the group
number and 𝐶𝐶𝐶 to the first 3 digits of the identification number.

1. An electromagnetic wave of 𝑓 = 𝐺𝐺 𝑀𝐻𝑧 and 𝑃1+ = 120𝑚𝑊/𝑚2 , incident from the air (𝜂1 =
120𝜋 𝛺), perpendicular to an infinite wall with an intrinsic impedance 𝜂2 = 𝐶𝐶𝐶 𝛺.
Calculate the reflected power 𝑃1− and the transmitted power 𝑃2+ to the wall.

Figure 1: Propagation of “normal wave” in infinite medium.

2. An electromagnetic wave of 𝑓 = 𝐺𝐺 𝑀𝐻𝑧 and 𝑃1+ = 120𝑚𝑊/𝑚2 , coming from a
wave generator located 12𝑐𝑚 from the wall, which impinges from the air
(𝜂1 = 120𝜋 𝛺) perpendicularly on a wall with an intrinsic impedance 𝜂2 = 𝐶𝐶𝐶 𝛺 and
20𝑐𝑚 thick. The wall is made of a non-magnetic and non-dissipative material. On
the other side of the wall is a receiver located 20cm away.

Figure 2: Propagation of “normal wave” in finite medium.

a. Calculate the coefficient of reflection and transmission seen by the generator.

b. Determine in [%] and [𝑚𝑊/𝑚2 ] the power that is transmitted to the receiver.

3. An electromagnetic wave propagates through several media as shown in the graph.

Figure 3: Propagation of “oblique wave” in finite media.

Initially the ray travels through the ice layer striking the air layer at point B, forming
an angle of 𝜃𝑎 = 44,9°. Using Snell's Law, calculate step by step the total path of the
wave to determine the value of "d". Note that each layer is 𝐶𝐶𝐶 𝑚𝑚 thick and that at
point C there is a total refractive effect, so it is necessary to identify which material is
in layer 3 by calculating its refractive index.

Individual:
Each student, using the Delivery Format - Task 2 found in the Practical
Learning Environment, gradually presents the activity in the Task 2
forum until completing the following structure:
1. Cover.
2. Introduction (indicate what is in the document).
3. Content. (Answer to questions and exercises).
4. 2 conclusions (indicate in them what you learned).
5. 1 reference (in APA format).
The name of the final individual document must be Task 2 - First
Name Last Name.pdf.

Collaborative:
In the 3 days before the closing of the activity, students must present
their final individual work in pdf format in the Task 2 forum.
The leader must take the final works of each student and generate a

The APA standards are the most used style of organization and presentation
of information. These are published under a manual that allows you to have
access to the ways in which a scientific article should be presented. Here
Use of
you can find the most relevant aspects of the sixth edition of the APA

In the agreement 029 of December 13, 2013, article 99, the mistakes that
infringe upon the academic order, among others, are the following: paragraph
e) “To plagiarize is to present as your own work the whole or part of a writing,
report, task or document of invention performed by another person. It also
implies the use of cites or lack of references, or includes cites where there is
Plagiarism no coincidence between them and the reference” and paragraph f) ”To
policy reproduce, or copy for profit, educational resources or results of research
products, which have intellectual rights reserved for the University”.
The academic punishments that the student will face are:
a) In case of academic fraud proved in the academic work or evaluation, the
score achieved will be zero (0.0) without leading to disciplinary measures.
b) In case of plagiarism proved in the academic work of any nature, the
score achieved will be zero (0.0), without leading to disciplinary measures.
