Preliminary Evaluation

Georgia Linnard
The task that I was given was to create an 8 shot sequence short film. This was tasked to us
to show a clear genre. The genre that I and my group chose to do was action. We chose to
do action because we wanted to intensify our shots. You can tell that our film genre is action
because in the shots the characters in the shots are punching an individual which shows that
its action due to the fact that it’s fast and quick. My 8 shots include the conventional scene
of fighting due to the fact that it’s an action film. My 8 shot film uses mise en scene. There is
use of low-key and high key lighting as well as the location. The location shows to the
audience that the setting is in a school and that there are victims throughout the shots.

The purpose of creating an 8 shot short film was to use the camera effectively, to get used
to filming different shot angles and to develop my skill set with effective cinematography.
For example we used a variety of high angle, low angle, two shots, mid shots and wide
shots. We used these shots to emphasise what the different characters in the film represent
such as a low angle shot was used to show the two people walking up the stairs as strong
and dominant. High angle shots were used to portray the character as weak and vulnerable.
The use of these shots fitted into the genre because using low and high angle shots as well
as two shots etc to emphasise the fact that certain characters are weak and certain
characters are dominant, it gives the film a storyline for the audience to follow. The
techniques that I used to make my 8 shot sequence was keeping the camera when filming
steady so that the film run smoothly. Keeping the pace was also key because you want the
film to flow from one shot to the next so we had to keep an eye and control the pace of
what we were filming at. We also had to make sure our frame was correct and accurate
because there’s no point in having an 8 shot sequence if one of the characters heads were
cut out. The thing that was useful about these techniques was that the sequence runs
smoothly so it looks like it’s all been filmed in one, so it flows all the way to the end. Using
these techniques and considering them did improve the quality of the 8 shots because the
shots look good and are not of poor quality, all the characters are in the shot and are not cut
out.

This shot is an example of a two shot. A two shot is a type of shot when the frame
encompasses two people or the subjects. A two shot is used to establish a relationship
between subjects. This shot is generally sued to create great dramatic tension. The reason
why I used a two shot is because I wanted to show the different characters who are involved
in my 8 shot.

This is an example of a mid-shot. A mid shot is used for dialogue sequences, allowing the viewer to
pick up on the characters movements and gestures. Body language is important when filming
because it conveys emotion, as it remains close enough to capture the emotion. The reason why I

Georgia Linnard
used a mid-shot is because I want the audience to see the emotion on the characters face, to show
that he is shocked.

This is a wide shot. A wide shot is a camera angle that shows the entire object or person and their
relation to what surrounds them. A wide shot is used to establish the relationship of characters to
each other or to their surroundings, reveal more information about the scene. I used a wide shot to
show the scene where this is happening and to show the relationship between the different
characters.

A long shot is from a considerable distance, so that people appear as indistinct shapes. A long shot is
used to stress the environment or setting of a scene. A long shot typically shows the entire object or
human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings.

This is an example of a slight close up shot. A close up shot displays the most detail, but they do not
include the broader scene. Moving toward or away from a close-up is a common type of zooming. A
close up shot is used to give the audience an indication of how the character is feeling. I used a close
up shot to portray to the audience the characters reaction and emotions.

I used another wide shot in my 8 shot sequence because wide shots are generally used more than
once just to emphasise the location of the scene and the reasson why the caharcters have taken
certain actions to tell the story in the film.

A Low angle shot is a shot from a camera angle positioned low on the vertical axis, anywhere below
the eye line, looking up. A low angle shot is used to give the audience a sense that they are sharing
the character's perspective, especially when they are looking up at something. Another reason low
angle shots are used in film is to make the characters in the film look stronger and more dominant.
In this case, it is used to show that the characters standing up are stronger than the individual they
are picking on whose lying on the floor.

This shot is an example of a high angle shot. A high angle shot is a cinematic technique where the
camera looks down on the subject from a high angle. A long angle shot can make the subject seem
vulnerable or powerless when applied with the correct mood, setting, and effects. The reason I Used
a high angle shot is to show the character lower down to the floor as weak and vulnerable due to the
fact that the other characters in the shot are beating him up.

Overall, I have learnt whilst creating this 8 shot film is that to get the best marks, you need
to use a variety of different shots as well as getting good marks on the film, it also makes the
film different and interesting which draws people’s attention and catches their eye.

If I were creating my own film, I would use different shots such as a bird’s eye view, over the
shoulder if there were a conversation, a POV shot to create more of a meaning to my film.
Although I would also use some of the shots that I used in my 8 shot sequence film such as
the high and low angles shots to show the stronger and weaker characters, two shots and
wide shots I would also use if I wanted to show part of the scene of where I am shooting but
also to show the different characters. I would apply the skills that I have learnt from creating
an 8 shot sequence by using a variety of different shots to portray to the audience different
meanings to create a story to make my own film a high standard.
