Preliminary Evaluation

The task that I was given was to create an 8 shot sequence short film. This was tasked to us
to show a clear genre. The genre that I and my group chose to do was action. We chose to
do action because we wanted to intensify our shots. You can tell that our film genre is action
because in the shots the characters in the shots are punching an individual which shows that
its action due to the fact that it’s fast and quick. My 8 shots include the conventional scene
of fighting due to the fact that it’s an action film.my 8 shot film uses mise en scene. There is
use of low-key and high key lighting as well as the location. The location shows to the
audience that the setting is in a school and that there are victims throughout the shots.
Does your 8 shot include any conventional scenes or use of mise en scene?

The purpose of creating an 8 shot short film was to use the camera effectively, to get used
to filming different shot angles cinematography usage? For example we used a variety of
high angle, low angle, two shots, mid shots and wide shots. We used these shots to
emphasise what the different characters in the film represent such as a low angle shot was
used to show the two people walking up the stairs as strong and dominant. High angle shots
were used to portray the character as weak and vulnerable. The use of these shots fitted
into the genre because using low and high angle shots as well as two shots etc to emphasise
the fact that certain characters are weak and certain characters are dominant, it gives the
film a storyline for the audience to follow. We also got set this task so we could learn how
to edit…. What techniques did you use? What was so useful about using different
techniques? Did it improve the quality of the 8 shot?

Two Shot/Mid Shot

This shot is an example of a two shot. A two shot is used to present the two main characters
and helps the audience to understand them and their surroundings. This shot also presents
the relationship between the two characters in the scene. The actions shown within this two
shot could also foreshadow the coming events and upcoming scenes.

This is a mid-shot

In this scene we see one of the characters shown through a mid-shot displaying a shocked facial
expression. This shot is useful as it could represent his fear and yet his lonliness compared to the
two shot where
High angle shot

This shot is an example of a high angle shot. A low angle shot is used to establish a difference in
power between the two characters where the character shown in the lower position is presented as
weaker and the character shown towering over is shown as strong dominant and powerful.

Numerous music and sound effects were added in so they were non diegetic. This was used to fit the
genre and to make the scene or lead up to a certain scene. A deep toned music was used during the
action to give a sense of seriousness and darkness however the lead up to it was a high toned
comedic music so the audience would be surprised when they saw the fighting. The comedic music
was also used to mock the character getting beaten up. One of the sound effects that were added
was a beep; this would happen in the middle of every fight scene to add mystery to what had
happened next and to keep the audience watching. It was also used to put together the next scene
without it looking messy. In the last fighting scene punching sound effects were used to exaggerate
the punches being thrown at one of the characters which made it a bit funny and afterwards there
was a clip that showed all those who worked on the clip with comedic sound affects in the
background to again take away the tension from all the action.

What will you do for when you create your own film?

Overall, I have learnt whilst creating this 8 shot film is that to get the best marks, you need
to use a variety of different shots as well as getting good marks on the film, it also makes
the film different and interesting which draws people’s attention and catches their eye.
If I were creating my own film, I would use different shots such as a bird’s eye view, over the
shoulder if there were a conversation, a POV shot to create more of a meaning to my film.
Although I would also use some of the shots that I used in my 8 shot sequence film such as
the high and low angles shots to show the stronger and weaker characters, two shots and
wide shots I would also use if I wanted to show part of the scene of where I am shooting but
also to show the different characters. I would apply the skills that I have learnt from creating
an 8 shot sequence by

Be specific here… what shots will you use? What would you do differently? How are you
going to use the skills you’ve learnt from this to ensure your own film is of a high standard?

I would add dialogue to the film so the audience get a good understanding of what’s going on. I
would also make it and horror with an extra sense of mystery to keep the audience intrigued so they
want to keep watching to see what happens next. I would also add background music to set the tone
to have the music correlate to what is going on in the current scene. I would also use different
editing techniques to make it scarier and build up tension to keep the audience attached. I would
also use non diegetic sound effects to exaggerate what is going on and to make it seem more natural
or as if the audience are therein the movie.
