Preliminary Evaluation

We was tasked to make an 8 shot sequence in order to prepare for the short film we would be
tasked to make. The genre we chose was comedy we chose comedy as we feel comedy is one of the
more popular genres to watch. The process of making this film included planning the shots and
storyline before filming this giving us time to structure the narrative and make sure we use the right
shots to create a comedic narrative. Location also played a big factor in creating this film as lighting
was effected and also the surrounding environments.

The purpose of the task was not only to use the camera effectively in portraying a comedic genre but
also to show a variation of shots and shot types to show the effect it can add to a production. We
used a variation of shots such a close ups to show the characters focus on in the scene, This helps
shift the views focus on to what the character is
seeing therefore making the audience relate to what
is happening. We also used low angle shots, the ow
angle shots were used to show a hierarchical power
in the first scene where the character is first
introduced this was done specifically to show the
importance of the character. This also helped start
support our comedic genre as there is no real
importance to the character it is all just a matter of
he feels like he should be important this is supported by the dramatic slow motion shot of the doors
opening this is followed by a normal mid shot to show how when in reality he is just and average
person. In the shot where the two boys bump into each other the music cuts out this is too enthesis
the awkwardness in to shot helping create a comedic effect in the video this then goes to two over
the shoulder shots.

These two shots show a comedic stare off resulting in both the character simaltaneously looking
down at the keys that where dropped this is done to show they are both trying to assert dominance
this helpig show the comedic genre. While editing we learnt how to fade in and out a transition seen
smoothly in the frist twos shots this helped support this powerful entrance. We also learnt how to
fade in and out sound seen twice when Lucas is called by asa and also when the two character bump
into each other. This was effectivly done to shift focus in one and to create an atmopshere in the
other which was very effective when creating a comedy. The music added also helped the sequence
as it helped show the confidence of the character while going about his day, this helped define the
character without him having to say anything. Effectivly giving him and amusing presents.

I learnt over all how to show different things such as conversations with shots and also how to create
a persona without a character having to speak I think this will be very effective in my short film when
doing things such as montages to show emotions through just shots showing the audienece what is
going on. Ive also learnt how to use editing sorfware effectivly and found out things I didn’t know
before this giving me the ability to inhance the audience more in the storyline.
