Hari Parbat is a hill overlooking Srinagar, the largest city and summer capital of Jammu and
Kashmir, India. It is the site of a Durrani fort, built in 1808. It has the famous Shakti Temple on
the western Slope and Muslim shrines of Khwaja Makhdoom Sahib and Akhund Mullah Shah on
the southern slope. On the southern side of the outer wall there is a Gurudwara, which
commemorates the visit of Guru Hargobind.
The first fortifications on the site were constructed by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1590. He
built an outer wall for the fort, and planned a new capital called Nager Nagor to be built within
the wall. That project was never completed. The present fort was built in 1808 under the reign of
Shuja Shah Durrani. The Fort still stands as proud as ever on ite vantage point overlooking the
Srinagar city. The Fort Hillside holds some important places of worship for varied religious
inclinations. There is. There is the Sharika Devi Mandir who is worshipped as an incarnation of
Shakti. On the day celebrated as Sharika's birthday, devotees make a sacrificial offering of taher-
charvan to the goddess (taher - rice boiled with turmeric powder and mixed with oil and salt;
charvan – cooked goat liver). Then there is the Chatti Padshahi Gurudwara where the Sixth Guru,
Guru Hargobind had supposedly preached and stayed for a few days during a visit to Kashmir.
This Gurudwara is considered the holiest Sikh shrine in Kashmir.
Due to rainfall unfortunately one of the buttress from from Bachi darwaza side
collapsed.
Proposal:
It is proposed to reconstruct the buttress in stone masonry so that newly constructed buttress will
blend with the existing stone masonry wall and restore its glory.
Time of completion: Two working seasons as all the work is to be done manually without use of
any machinery and lack of working space.
