Introduction
• Automation can be defined as a technology concerned with the
application of electronics,mechanical & computer-based control
systems to operate and control the production.
• A fully automated production line does not need people directly
involved in the operation, and all or part of the process of the
production is completed by mechanical equipment and automated
systems.
• There are three types of automation in production: Hard automation
(also known as ‘fixed automation’), programmable automation and soft
automation (also known as ‘flexible automation’).
• To perform a task without human intervation to improve the
productivity & quality.
• CNC,PLC,Automated guided vehicle,robots.
history
1.Manual control
2.Pneumatic control
3.Hard wire logic control
4.Electronic control using gate
5.PLC
Reasons for automation
1. To increase labor productivity
2. To reduce labor cost
3. To improve worker safety
4. To improve product quality
5. To reduce manufacturing lead time
6. To accomplish processes that cant be done manually
