1. A ferry boat transports tourists among three regions. It sails from the first region to
the second region, 4 km away, in a direction 30° north of east. It then sails from the
second region to the third region in a direction 60° west of north. Finally it returns to
the first region, sailing in a direction 45° east of south. Calculate the distance
between (a) the second and third regions (b) the first and third regions.
2. A firefighter needs to know the maximum height on the wall she can project water
from the hose. What parameters would you program into a wrist computer to find
the angle , that she should use to hold the hose?
5. Three objects are connected on the table as shown in Figure below. The table is
rough and has a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.4. The objects have masses of 4 kg,
1 kg, and 2 kg, as shown, and the pulleys are frictionless. Draw free-body diagrams of
each of the objects. (a) Determine the acceleration of each object and their
directions. (b) Determine the tensions in the two cords.
6. Tarzan (m = 75 kg) tries to cross a river by swinging from a vine. The vine is 8 m long,
and his speed at the bottom of the swing (as he just clears the water) will be 10 m/s.
Tarzan doesn’t know that the vine has a breaking strength of 1 000 N. Does he make
it safely across the river?
