( Use Of the Fourier Rate Equation)
the date of the experiment :15/3/2017
the delivery date of the experiment :22/3/2017
Objective
This experiment is to understand the use of
Fourier rate equation in determining rate of
heat flow through solid materials for one
dimensional steady flow of heat conduction to
calculate the thermal conductivity of the
materials.
Method
To demonstrate Fourier's Law for the linear
conduction of heat along a simple bar, by
measuring the change in temperature with at
different rates of heat flow through the bar
using the measurements to calculate the
conductivity of the bar.
Equipment
-Heat transfer service unit
-Linear heat Conduction Accessory
-Stop watch
-water sourse
- flow Control valve
-water fiow rate sensor
Results and Calculations
For this exercise the raw data is tabulated
under the following headings:
Heater Voltage )Volts(
Heater Current )Amps(
Heated section high temperature T1
Heated section mid temperature(c) T2
Heated section low temperature(C) T3
Cooled section high temperature T6
Cooled section mid temperature T7
Cooled section low temperature(°C) T8
Cooling water flow rate Fw (1/min)
Steps of calculation
• Heat transfer rate from the heater [Q=I*V]
• Temperature difference in the heated,
intermediate and cooled sections,
∆ T 1−3 ¿ T −T
¿ =
1 3 ,∆ T 4−5 =T 4 −T 5

,∆ T 6−8 =T 6−T 8

• The distance between the temperature

measuring points of the heated, intermediate
and cooled sections,
Δx 1−3 =∆ x 6−8=0.03m ,,∆ x 4 −5 =0.015 m

• Hence, the thermal conductivity, k of the

sections of bar are calculated as,
x 1−3 Q
K 1−3=
∆ T 1−3 A1−3 ¿
¿

∆ x 4 −5 Q
K 4 −5=
∆ T 4−5∗A 4−5
∆ x 6−8 Q
K 6−8 =
∆T 6−8 A 6−8

Procedure
Following the basic operating procedure, smear
the faces of the heated and cooled sections
with thermal conducting paste and clamp them
together with the brass intermediate specimen
in place as shown below,
1- According the procedure, ensure the
cooling water is flowing (1.5 lit/min). • Set the
heater voltage V to n Volts. • Monitor
temperatures, T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8 until
stable. • When the temperature are stabilized
record: T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, V, and I.
2- 2- Repeat the above procedures with step
voltage V of 50 Volts. • Monitor temperatures,
T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8 until stable. •
When the temperature are stabilized record:
T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, V, and I.
