RED BLOOD CELLS

Our blood contains three types of cells: white blood cells, platelets and red blood
cells.Red blood cells are also called erythrocytes. These type of  cells are small,
round and flexible(Curley,2016 ).Red blood cells are made in the bone marrow. They
typically live for 120 days .
Red blood cells have two mainly features that make them suittable for their
function.Firstly,their biconcave  shape,concave on both sides,gives them a large
surface area to absorb oxygen .Secondly, their tiny size makes them  squeeze
easily  through the tiny blood capillaries,to deliver oxygen. These mature red blood
cells have no nucleus(BBC,2017).
Also they dont have mitochondria or rybosomes neither. This allows more room for
haemoglobin.Haemoglobin  is the protein that carries oxygen and  releases the
carbon dioxide in the blood .It is also responsible for the red color of it.The
cell is covered  by a membrane which contains mostly  proteins and some other
substances. The most important  function of red blood cells is transporting of
oxygen to  other cells of the body  and  delivering  carbon dioxide to the
lungs(Bailey,2017).
