Reflection:
This is a reflection paper about on how the “That Sugar Film”(a documentary film)
and Concepts of the Public Good: A View from the Filipinos Philosopher by Rolando
Gripaldo relate to the lesson about “The Good Life”. But first what is the film “ That
Sugar Film”? this is a film that Filmmaker Damon Gameau documents the effects of
eating supposedly healthy foods that contain high amounts of sugar. And the
Concepts of the Public Good: A View from the Filipinos Philosopher by Rolando
Gripaldo is that the author argues that the concept of the public good carries largely
the politico-ethical sense which subsumes the politico-economic sense. The public
good is public in the sense that the beneficiaries are the general public. The
government or state pursues it with a service orientation while private corporations
pursue it with a profit orientation. The author also discusses mixed public goods
which are pursued by private organizations with a service motivation. Government
corporations are basically motivated by service though having profit is not precluded.
Finally, the author talks about public bads such as corruption, pollution, and crimes.
Which I can say that is so related to the topic The Good life, they can both make us
and let us reflect on our selves the question about what is The Good Life in this
world? As an individual we can do what ever we want to do to make our selves
satisfy its either in a bad way or in a good way its up to us, but if we consider the
consequences that can happen to our health and to our relationship with others,
those self satisfaction can also ruin us as a human or a person. In our discussion
about the good life “Hedonism”: was mentioned and it is said that for Hedonists,
since life is limited, one must indulge itself with pleasure – “Eat, drink, and be merry
for tomorrow we die” and also “Humanism” was mentioned, it said that human beings
have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape their own lives. “It is not
theistic and does not accept supernatural views of reality” – IHEU, International
Humanist and Ethical Union. That’s why the “That Sugar Film” and the Concepts of
the Public Good is really realated in our topic “The Good Life”.
