EM15 Final Review Part3/3

1. (15.14) A hydro mechanical torque pressure indicator measures hydraulic pressure acting on the
pistons of two cylinders.

2. (15.4) In the disc-type compressor rotor construction, the axial load is taken up by blade platform and
spacer rings.

3. (15.14) A ratio meter circuit is used for engine oil temperature measurement. If the ratio meter gives an
off-scale high reading, then there is an open circuit in the balancing coil.

4. (15.12) In electric heating system for turboprop engines, electric heating pads are bonded to the outer
skin of the cowlings.

5. (15.14) With respect to a turbofan engine, the engine station references are 1 for inlet, f for fan
discharge and 8 are outlet. The engine pressure ratio measurement is achieved using P8/P1, Pf/P1 and
the bypass ratio.

6. (15.10) In the full flow system of oil lubricating, the pump size is determined by the flow required at
maximum engine speed.

7. (15.2) Standard day conditions for referencing engine parameters are 15 degrees celsius and 19.62 in
Hg.

8. (15.9) The "Prist" additive commonly used with gas-turbine fuel is added from 0.06 to 0.15 percent by
volume.

9. (15.13) With cartridge starting, the starter is usually a small impulse-type turbine driven by high
velocity gases.

10. (15.11) In fuel control terminology, a "rich"blowout is the result of having too much fuel entering the
combustion chamber.

11. (15.11) The purpose of the pressurizing fuel valve found in fuel system is to apportion fuel to the
manifolds.

12. (15.22) For short-term storage of installed gas turbine engines, clean exterior surfaces to detect
corrosion and afterwards dry with compressed air.

13. (15.9) Corrosive deterioration of engine and fuel system components is due to sulphur content of jet
fuels.

14. (15.16) In respect of turboprop engine controls, an overspeed governor in normal operation routes
pressure oil to operate a selector valve in the PCU.

15. (15.20) In the flight deck, pulling the fire handle with a red light on isolates flammable sources from
the prevailing fire.

16. (15.15) The primary purpose of including methanol in water injection is to lower freezing point of
water.

17. A system of variable inlet guide vanes is used for a single shaft fast turbine engine. The VIGVs are
scheduled to close progressively to maintain acceptable air angles for rotor blades.

18. (15.19) The fire wall is constructed with high temperature sealants.

19. (15.3) The purpose of having hollow inlet guide vanes is to pass hot air for ice protection.

20. (15.2) The thermal efficiency of gas turbine engines is controlled by cycle pressure ratio and
combustion temperature.

21. (15.5) "Smokeless burners"have designs to achieve smoke emission to a viability threshold. This is
achieved enriching the air-fuel ratio in the primary combustion zone.

22. (15.1) One difference between ram jet and gas turbine engines is that ram jet has no major rotating
parts.
23. (15.17) To ensure the starter load is minimum when starting turboshaft engines on helicopters, a
stress-free pickup of rotor momentum is preferred.

24. (15.21) It is observed that an engine experiences an increase in EGT, a decrease in EPR and a change
in the RPM ratio between the core engine and the fan. The underlying cause is most probably FOD.

25. (15.6) The purpose of nozzle guide vanes is to control the speed, direction and pressure of hot gases
as they enter the turbine.

26. (15.20) For the higher temperature levels encountered in supersonic airplanes, the best form of fire
detector elements is surveillance detectors that respond to light radiation from a fire.

27. (15.14) When a piezoelectric accelerometer is alternately squeezed and relaxed, it generates a charge
in the crystal that is a junction of the frequency of vibration.

28. (15.19) During the removal of engines from any position of the aircraft in general, tail stand
requirements vary with the aircraft type and the number of engines to be removed.

29. (15.16) The engine and propeller combination in a turboprop can be plagued by malfunctions of either
the FCU and the PCU.

30. (15.19) The access to an engine mounted in the wing or fuselage is by hinged doors provided with
quick-release fasteners.
