Dr. William Alexander Newman Dorland was born in Hilton Head S.C. on Decmber 26,
1864. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1886 he
served as instructor of obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania and as a professor of
gynecology at Pennsylvania Polyclinic. Later he was Professor of Gynecology at Loyola
University Post-Graduate Medical School in Chicago.

Dr. Dorland wrote and published a series of medical reference books that are still widely used
by the medical profession today including the "American Illustrated Medical Dictionary" first
published in 1890. After his death in 1956 the books were retitled to include his name. The
word Dorland's is now the brand name for a family of more than 20 medical books available
in various media (including printed books, CD-ROMs, and online content). He also authored
several other non-medical books.

An article published in The Panama City News Herald on March 17, 1956, featuring Dr.
Dorland described him as a wheel chaired patient in the Bay Pines Veterans Hospital, near St.
Petersburg Fla., a victim of arthritis. He had previously been living in Tampa for several
years in obscurity and in poverty. A group of veterans upon learning that he was a surgeon in
WWI easily persuaded him to go to Bay Pines, where he lived out the rest of his days.
