Application questions:

1. Skateboard bomb drop. The distance S(t), in feet, traveled by a body falling freely from
rest in t seconds is approximated by
S (t) = 16t2
On April 6, 2006, pro skateboarder Danny Way smashed the world record for the
“bomb drop” by free-falling 28 ft from the Fender Stratocaster guitar atop the Hard
Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas onto a ramp below. How long did it take until he hit
the ramp?

2. Running records. According to at least one study, the world record in any running race
can be modeled by a linear equation. In particular, the world record R, in minutes, for
the mile run in year x can be modeled by
R = -0.00582x + 15.3476.
Use this model to estimate the world records for the mile run in 1954, 2008, and
2012. Round your answers to the nearest hundredth of a minute.

3. Compound interest. An investor deposits $1000 in Wiles Municipal Bond Funds, at 5%.
How much is the investment worth (rounded to the nearest cent) at the end of 1 year, if
interest is compounded:
a) Annually? b) Semiannually? c) Quarterly? d) Daily (use 365 days for 1 year)? e)
Hourly?
4. A firm has a fixed cost of $7000 for plant and equipment and a variable cost of $600 for
each produced. What is the total cost C of producing:
a. 15,
b. 30 units of output?
5. A candy maker wants to blend candy worth 45 cents a pound worth 85 cents a pound to
obtain 200 pounds of a mixture worth 70 cents a ponds. How much of each type should
go into the mixture?
6. Given that 00 (Celsius) is equal to 320 F (Fahrenheit) and 1000 C is equal to 2120 F and
that there is a straight – line relationship between temperatures measured on the
different scales, express the relationship as a linear equation.
7. How much wine with an 18% alcohol content must be mixed with 6000 gallons of wine
with a 12% alcohol content to obtain wine with a 16% alcohol content?
8. Pressure under water: The pressure p experienced by a diver under water is related to
the diver’s depth d by an equation of the form p = kd + 1 (k a constant). At the surface,
the pressure is 1 atmosphere. The pressure at 100 meters is about 10.94 atmospheres.
Find the pressure at 50 meters.
9. The Mt. Washington Cog railway. Civil engineers calculate the slope of roadbed as the
ratio of the distance it rises or falls to the distance it runs horizontally. They call this
ratio the grade of the roadbed, usually written as a percentage. Along the coast,
commercial railroad grade are usually less than 2%. In the mountains, they may go as
high as 4%. Highway grades are usually less than 5%.
The steepest part of the Mt. Washington Cog railway in New Hampshire has an
Exceptional 37.1% grade. Along this part of the track, the seats in the front of the car are
14 ft above those in the rear. About how far apart are the front and rear rows of seats?

10. Life science: incidence of breast cancer. The following graph approximates the
incidence of breast cancer y, per 100,000 women, as a function of age x, where x
represents ages 25 to 102.

a. What is the incidence of breast cancer in 40-yr-old women?

b. For what ages is the incidence of breast cancer about 400 per 100,000 women?
c. Examine the graph and try to determine the age at which the largest incidence of breast
cancer occurs.
d. What difficulty do you have making this determination?
