Extra Credit Projects for Fall 2017

1. Make me a map! Go to one of the online mapping sites, such as Bing or Google Maps
and go to someplace in the world that interests you. Use the tools to zoom in. There
should also be a feature that allows you to look at the aerial photo (satellite) image or the
‘road’ map image. Compare the two types of images and write up a paragraph on what
strikes you as interesting about the images and why you picked that place. Print out a
copy of the image (either road or aerial) to go with your write-up.

2. Shake it up! Find information on an earthquake that occurred in 2016-2017. Give the
location and intensity, whether it caused a tsunami or not, and describe the tectonic
plate movement that caused the quake.

3. Clean it up! Do a quick investigation and list the top four (4) countries in the world in
terms of greenhouse emissions. Give a brief explanation of what is happening in these
countries to cause the emissions. Given what you know so far about environmental
problems, what is the solution to the problem of global greenhouse gas emissions?

4. Show me the money! Go on any search engine and find a list of the three (3) biggest
and richest companies in the world. Print out a map of where these companies’
headquarters are located. Why do you think these companies chose to locate where
they are? What does this tell you about what job sectors make the most money?

5. Go Global! What are the major sources of jobs in Nash County? Who are the top three
employers (Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing)? How many jobs are they
responsible for? How do these institutions tend to “globalize” the county and economy?
What does this tell you about the best academic programs in terms of finding a job?
