Shadowing: For Better Understanding Accented Englishes

As a Franca lingua, English has been the language of communication among English speakers for a long
time. However, many people come up with difficulty when interacting with each other utilizing English
and the reason is the incomprehensible accents they use. To have a better interaction, speakers should
speak English with comprehensible pronunciation; however the listeners should understand other
accents too. The question is whether nonnative speakers should only be exposed to accented English as
native speakers or another beneficial technique of teaching should be employed . Therefore the
following study examined which is more effective for Japanese students’ perceptual adaptation—
listening to an unfamiliar foreign accent , here in the study Chinese accent is used, or shadowing. The
shadowing group engaged in a shadowing conversation between two Chinese speakers speaking English,
while the listening group only listened and they did not take the active role of making use of doing any
activities. Every group was given four lessons of 15 minutes. The results of the study showed that the
shadowing group performed way better than the listening group regarding listening skills.
