Summary
Eco-efficiency is considered a key element to promote fundamental changes in the way that
societies produce and consume resources, and therefore to measure progress in the Growth in harmony
with the environment. Its pillars are to reduce the overexploitation of resources and the pollution
associated with the production process, where energy consumption and pollutant emissions and discharges
are reduced.
Eco-efficiency is a way in which companies can contribute to sustainable development and its
objective is to achieve a significant reduction in the total use of natural resources in order to mitigate the
environmental consequences of overloading the environment. Bidoki et al. (2006) points out that Eco-
efficiency has its three fundamental objectives are:
a) increase the value of the product or service,
b) optimize the use of resources and
c) reduce the environmental impact.
The EA is based on the life cycle analysis defined in the ISO 14040 series of standards, the AE is
an important strategy and a success factor for achieving sustainability. Therefore, it is a way for the
recognition and detection on a regular and timely basis of economic and environmental opportunities, it
makes possible the development and optimization of products and processes, and the selection of the most
eco-efficient alternative by the comparison of products and processes.
Important elements of the environmental assessment include: energy use, use of raw materials,
emissions to the environment (air, water, soil), toxicity, safety risk, and land use through which problems
and the potential drivers of environmental impacts can easily be identified and described. The
environmental, social and economic dimensions through eco-efficiency become the company's
opportunity. Where in the environmental impact, in the principle of eco-efficiency it is necessary to
evaluate the replacement of materials, introduction of cleaner technologies, non-polluting products and
reuse of resources. All this strategy improves environmental performance by reducing costs.
On the other hand, the choice of variables to implement an indicator will depend on the object of
study, the purpose of the analysis and the limitations of the available data; on the other, eco-efficiency
indicators should be selected from those that best fit the object evaluated
To conclude Eco-efficiency is the generation of goods and services at competitive prices that meet
human needs and improve the quality of life, while at the same time progressively reducing ecological
impacts and the intensity of resource use throughout the entire life cycle, up to a level consistent with the
estimated carrying capacity of the planet. Eco-efficiency includes efforts in clean production, saving
resources, controlling risks and losses, inter-company cooperation and innovation.
