PLAYDOH EMOTIONS
Printing out or creating flashcards with different emotions labeled and
pictures is a great thing to have at home. Your young child is still
learning how to regulate their emotions, and how to behave when
feeling a certain way. A great way to help them learn more about their
feelings is to print out these cards, and have them recreate the faces
with play doh. Doing this together can help them learn the emotions
by your reading of the label, their recreation of the face, and if you
made the face. “Sad, she’s sad” followed by a frown on your face will
help them to learn how to identify emotions. You can also print out a
template of a child with a blank face and have them fill in the face with
PlayDoh on how they feel at that moment.

SENSORY BIN
A great guidance and calming activity to have at home is a sensory bin!
We have a very large one in our class to accommodate several children
at once, but all you need is a large Tupperware or even a large (but short
sided) box. In this, you can put water beads, scented rice (mix a couple
drops of essential oil to dry rice), died rice, pipe cleaners, pom-poms,
sand, water, etc. You can add manipulatives such as cups, measuring
cups, sifters, shovels, etc. so your child can use their motor skills to scoop
and pour the different materials. This is such a fun and easy activity that
will definitely engage your child. I’d love to hear the different ways you
incorporate this into your home!

THANKFUL TREE
Thanksgiving is near, and we are all about it in our classroom! We are
constantly talking about our blessings and what we are thankful for in
life. At home, an easy activity to help your child wind down on an
emotional day and ease some stress in the house is to create a
thankful tree. This activity is super easy and affordable, costing little to
nothing. To create the tree, you can find branches outside and put
them into a vase you have at home, or even cut tree branches out of
construction paper. After, cut leaves from paper (can be multicolored,
mono colored, whatever works for you). On each leaf, have your child
write (or help them write) different things they are thankful for. Food
on the table, family, friends, pets, sports, etc. are a few examples.
Doing this as a family, or just you and your child is a meaningful
activity that will brighten your day every time you walk by!

TORNADO?
Does it feel like every time you turn
around, a new drawing is on the wall,
makeup on the chair, legos covering the
floor, cupboards are open, and children
are covered in who knows what? This is
a great sign that your child is not
engaged in anything, and is rather
bored. Try introducing them to
something that they haven’t played with
in a while, go on a walk in a different
path than usual, or maybe sit down with
them to do art. Try to engage them in
something other than their normal
activities.
