Introduction Scott: “Welcome to our Year 1 Assembly. We have been learning about where
animals live.
30 sec
We started by reading Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae. The story
starts like this…”

Everyone enters the stage from the right and stands in one line in the middle of
Commotion
in the the stage and says:
Ocean x2
pg 1 All read from book:
“There is a curious commotion
at the bottom of the ocean.
I think we ought to go and take a look.

You’ll find every sort of creature

that lives beneath the sea
swimming through the pages of this book.

There are dolphins, whales, and penguins.

There are jellyfish and sharks.
There’s the turtle and the big white polar bear.

But can you see behind the wrecks

and in between the rocks?
Let’s see if we can find who’s hiding there.”

Music starts once everyone exits stage. (Chantelle - press play).

Deep-water Fish, Shark, Dolphin, and Jelly fish exit stage right.
Scuba diver and Crab exit stage left.

Music element: Instruments

Plays for duration of assembly:

ambience – Deep Ocean Sleep Sounds

Scene 1 Scuba diver enters from stage left.

Scuba Shania/ Sally: “I’m a scuba diver and I’m spending the day exploring creatures
Diver Sally that live beneath the sea. Come with me to see what commotion we can find in
(Shania) the ocean.”
Crab

1.5 min Scuba diver bumps into crab (Chantelle: Cymbal)

(Music & Shania/ Sally: “Hello there, my name is Sally the scuba diver. What’s your
Drama name?”
Element)
Sophie/ Crab: “Hello! I am Clicker the crab.”

Shania/Sally: “Woah look at those big claws you have! What do you use your
claws for?”

Sophie/ Crab: “Yes I have two big claws. My Claws keep me safe and help me
to hunt for food.” (Click, click)

Shania/ Sally: “How cool! What else can you tell me about crabs?”

Sophie/ Crab:
● “I can tell you lots about Crabs Sally...Crabs have hard shells called
exoskeletons. Our exoskeleton protects us from predators and provides
support for our bodies. (Click, click)
● Crabs have 10 legs and walk and swim sideways. We like walking
sideways and I think the reason why is to make myself look sneaky and
pretend that I’m a spy. (Click, click)
● Crabs live along the ocean shoreline. We like to live in rocky areas.
Some crabs like to be covered with water and some crabs live half in half
out of the water, their habitats are varied. (Click, click)
● Crabs like to be able to burrow out of sight for protection. Crabs like to
burrow into soft mud and sand. Have you ever seen evidence of our
burrowing on the beach? And did you know there are over 4000 types of
crabs in the world ?” (Click, click)

Sophie/ Crab:
Hey Sally I have a question for you:
“Why wouldn’t the crab share his toys?”

Shania: “Why?”

Sophie/crab: “Because he was shellfish hahaha”

(Click, click)(Click, click)(Click, click)

● I cannot breathe in the water, I must show myself to the surface for air
and I am a warm-blooded animal.
● Us dolphins stick together you know Sally and we have some awesome
friends. We live in schools, or pods of up to 12 Dolphins!
● I mainly feed on small fish and squid.
● Dolphins can live for about 17 years in the wild Sally! and there have
been some that have lived up to 50 years old! In dolphin years that’s a
lot!

Shania/ Sally: “Woah you must eat a lot of fish and squid to fill up your stomach!
Would you like to come with us to meet some more creatures in the deeper

Drama exactly are you?”

jelly! But not the jelly you may be used to eating. My body is 95% water,
and my jelly which is found inside me is made of only water and salt!
2. I am super squishy and flexible and that’s because I don’t have a single
bone in my body!
3. As well as having no bones I also have no heart, no brain and no eyes!
4. Lastly, I tend to hang around the surface of the ocean, and bob or float
around wherever the ocean tides take me, usually with a group of my
friends in a group we call a school!”

Shania/ Sally: “You have told me so many wonderful things about jellyfish but
one thing I was wondering is where do you jellyfish sleep?”

metres deep! So yes, I guess I am a little cranky…but I am mostly lonely...I don’t
have many friends down here…”
Shania/ Sally: “Wow! I love your little light.”
Scott: “My light is my very special feature, this spine has a luminous lure which
acts like a built in fishing rod! I use it to catch my prey.”
Shania/ Sally: “How can you survive down here? I can’t see any food for miles!”
Scott: “Well, I am a carnivore! That means I only eat meat!
My mouth is oh so big, I have many translucent teeth and I can open my jaw
