Narrative Report

The interview with the client began at 11:00 am on the 20th of March 2020, attended by the interviewer,
Michelle Luckberg P. Sabijon of CNU-CN Batch 2023. I promptly began by introducing myself and explaining
my intent towards the client, establishing respect, rapport and authority in the nurse-client relationship. The
client, Cerj Sarigumba was of Boholano descent, 17 years of age and was affiliated with Roman Catholicism.
He was born in Tagbilaran City, Bohol and has lived there since birth.
Although the client speaks Cebuano, Tagalog and is well versed in the use of English, he preferred to
use Cebuano as the medium for this interview and having shared some commonalities in language, an
interpreter was not needed. With regards to her cultural and geographical orientation, he cited the following
traditions and beliefs pertaining to healthcare: He stated that whenever he experienced asthma and shortness of
breathing his family would put him inside a big sack and let off steam to the sack and to him for relief and end
the asthma like a steam therapy. He also expressed his belief with the effectivity of the massage from a
“manghihilot” in healing the asthmatic and body experiencing fatigue. The interviewee also expressed his
feeling of ease and relief of his body when the manghihilot offered an herbal medicine that is applied in the
outer area of the skin all over the sprained/ stressed muscle called “haplas”. It is said to be a mixture of various
herbs found locally. Wearing black clothes during pregnancy, the practice of “pagtila ug asin basta gikan ug
lakaw arun dili mabuyagan”, “pagbutang ug gamay na buungon, kanang murag seed shape sa kwarta sa buntis
para di duolon ug wakwak”.
Healing belief systems include drinking warm water with submerged leaf of “tuba-tuba” helps in
alleviating fever. Also for instances where a child scratches his knees just like when he was little, an herb that is
found locally is being applied to the affected part. The herb is called “hagonoy” and is cut into pieces and
pounded before application to the wound. Other alternatives also include the application of “malunggay” leaves
applied following same process as the previous mentioned herb. Other practices includes the standard way of
healing and recovery through proper rest and less exposure on digital visual media as it is said to decline a
person’s immune system due to sedentary lifestyle.
One of their ways to take good care of themselves is to avoid “aswang” encounters. Aswang is a
mystical creature that is popular in the Philippines, particular to the locals just like in Bohol. They are believed
to bring bad luck and death. “Then kanang ikog sa pagi btaw kay pangpawala ig mga tiaw”, as verbalized by the
interviewee which means locals use the tail of a turkey to fight off aswang. He also specified that by the name
“aswang”, he also meant “wakwak” and “tiaw”.
The interviewee highlighted that these belief systems are mainly practice by his family and most locals
but it is not essentially practiced by himself all the time. He stated that “actually akoang pagtuo jud ani kai
nagkagamay because nagkadako nako ug daghan ug makingon ko na sakto-sakto rasad akong nahibawan about
sa body natu tungod sa science sad” he switched language to English and stated,” I am into workout these
months and intend to exercise daily, but I usually do it three to 4 times a week”. The mentioned exercise is by
doing 100 push- ups and 100 sit ups each day of workout. The interviewee also shared that he is controlling his
carb diet and it can be seen that he has good muscle mass and posture.
After having assessed the client, I drew the following conclusion(s):
I received the client generally oriented to time, and person, was mentally and physically capable of
answering the aforementioned assessment without due difficulty and there were no physiological deviances that
were noted during the interview. Above all mentioned, the interviewee e is much oriented with the modern and
scientific approach of healthcare systems.
