1. To reinforce language
You can use your reader to reinforce the language you are teaching. For example, if you are
working on unit 1 of Champions 1, you can use the reader to reinforce the grammar, speaking, and
writing in that unit.
2. To revise language
You can use your reader to revise language you have taught before. For example, you are using
Champions Starter. Your students have been on a long break and you would like to revise the
Present Simple from unit 3. You can revise by using the reader and the activities suggested here.
You can work on the grammar with any unit in any level of Champions. You can also help your
students develop their speaking and writing skills, again with any unit in any level of Champions.
Here is a suggestion for how to use the activities with your classes. Think about doing one activity
per week.
Integrating the reader with your course book work will give your students an opportunity to use the
grammar they are learning and to develop their speaking and writing skills.
Champions Reader Introduction
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Hi, my name is Verissimo Toste and I’m a teacher trainer for Oxford University Press.
I’d like to help you use the reader with your Champions course book.
You can use your reader in two ways:
You can use it to reinforce the language you are teaching. So, for example, if you are working on
unit 1 of Champions 1, you can use the reader to reinforce the grammar, speaking and writing in
that unit.
You can reinforce the grammar and the skills with any unit in any level of Champions.
You can also use your reader to revise language you have taught before. So, for example, you are
using Champions Starter. Your students have been on a long break and you would like to revise
the Present Simple from unit 3.
You can revise by using the reader and the activities suggested here.
You can also use the reader to motivate your students to learn.
They can make a poster to publicise the reader. They can make a word puzzle for their friends to
solve.
Or they can interview a character from the story.
You can find the instructions for these activities here.
For every unit of Champions you will find an activity for the grammar of that unit, as well as an
activity to develop your students’ speaking and writing skills - again, for every unit of Champions.
Of course, you can use the activities in any way you think best. Here is a suggestion.
Think about doing one activity per week.
Begin with one of the motivation activities. This will encourage your students to read the story with
more interest and a sense of purpose. It will also let them have fun with the story.
Then, choose the unit you want to focus on.
Look at the activities for that unit and choose the best order.
This way, you will motivate your students to read and then reinforce the language and skills to
improve their English.
And remember:
Above all, enjoy yourself. Reading is a great way to learn.
