3rd Grade Math Plans (Polygons)

Date Feb 10-14

Overview Polygons Unit 5
Objectives Math
MA.3.4.4 The Student will combine and subdivide polygons with three or four sides and
name the resulting polygons.

Possible I CAN statements -

I can combine and separate polygons with 3 or 4 sides and name what they make.

Whole Group Monday (MA.3.4.4)-

TTW go over week 18 RAMs
TTW go over today’s I Can statement, “I can combine and separate polygons with 3 or 4
sides and name what they make.”
TTW explain that with everything we know about polygons, we are now going to learn
how to combine polygons to make separate shapes.
TTW will tell students what a tangram is and discuss its origin.
TTW read Grandfather Tang’s Story by Ann Tompert.
TTW allow students to make predictions of what animal comes next.
TTW only read to the page with the crocodile as there will not be enough time to finish the
whole thing.
While the teacher is reading, TSW try to create the tangram animal pictures from the book
with their own tangram pieces on the carpet.
Once the teacher has finished the reading for that day, she will lead a discussion on how
we can combine shapes to make other shapes.
TTW ask the students to give examples of when this may be done in real life. (a sandwich
is a square that is cut into 2 triangles, a pizza is a circle cut into triangles.)
TTW go into small groups next.

Tuesday (MA 3.4.4 cont.)

Play video up to the 2:35 mark, it is too long otherwise, and students still cover pertinent
information in the first 2 minutes.
TTW remark on how similar what the man in the video did, and what we’ve been doing!
TTW finish reading Grandfather Tang’s Story by Ann Tompert.
TTW pick up from the crocodile page.
While the teacher is reading, TSW try to create the tangram animal pictures from the book with
their own tangram pieces on the carpet.
TTW distribute one shape for each student.
While the students are still sitting on the carpet they will turn to the student next to them and end
up in pairs. With their partner, they will combine shapes to make a new polygon, and then share
with the class what their two shapes were and what the new shape they made is.
TTW go into small groups next.

Wednesday (MA 3.4.4 Cont.)-

TTW tell the students that they’ve been doing so well in small group and independent
work that she wants to do it together for whole group.
TTW show the Combining Polygons PowerPoint
TSW name the polygons on the screen and name the shape it makes when they combine.
.
Thursday (MA 3.4.4 Cont.)-
TSW use their individual tangram pieces to create new shapes and trace them with a pencil
unto paper.

Friday (MA 3.4.4 Cont.)-

TTW instruct the students to log on to Kahoot for a review game that covers combining
polygons.
TTW put the quiz up on the promethium as well, so that she can review each question (and
why the answer is the answer) after they have answered.
TTW distribute the assessment for MA 3.4.4

Math Small Monday-

Groups TTW take a few minutes to review the polygons and all their names that we learned last
week.
TTW explain that while a quadrilateral is a four-sided polygons, there are other polygons
with four sides that are important, especially with tangrams.
TTW introduce trapezoid and rhombus,
Trapezoid: a quadrilateral with only one pair of parallel sides
Rhombus: any parallelogram with equal sides, including a square.
TSW practice drawing a trapezoid and rhombus with a straightedge and naming each.
TTW model so that they know the shape to draw.
TTW get out the jar of pattern blocks and instruct students to combine 2 squares and 1
triangle. A trapezoid and a square.
Use a marker to trace around that shape and then name the new polygon.
TSW continue to choose different shapes to combine and name. For the purpose of this
lesson, they must continue to work with only 3 and 4 sided tangrams.

Tuesday-
TTW review trapezoid and rhombus once more briefly.
TTW get out the jar of pattern blocks and instruct students to combine a rhombus, a
trapezoid, and a triangle.
Use a marker to trace around that shape and then name the new polygon.
TSW continue to choose different shapes to combine and name. For the purpose of this
lesson they must continue to work with only 3 and 4 sided tangrams.

Wednesday-
TTW get out the jar of pattern blocks and instruct students to combine a triangle, and a
trapezoid. Then 2 parallelograms. Use a marker to trace around that shape and then name
the new polygon.
TSW move from manipulatives to drawing
TSW complete a tangram pattern worksheet creating shapes using a specified number of
pieces (Ex. Create a triangle using exactly 2 pieces).
*Group 1- Tangram Duos, Group 2- Tangram Triples, Group 3- Tangram Quads*

Thursday-
TSW complete the Tangram Polygon Challenge worksheet. Group 1 will complete sheet
11 and group 3 will complete sheet 10. Group 2’s sheet will depend on their level of
understanding during the week.
TSW draw the polygons and only use the manipulatives as a backup.

Friday-
No small group today, Kahoot and assessment.

Differentiation Students will receive differentiation and individual instruction

Styles during small group. There will also be a read-a-loud group during
the assessment for the students who have that accommodation.
