Lesson Title: Reason with shapes and their attributes

Materials/Resources Needed: Toothpicks and play dough

Focus
and
Review

Last class we learned about what makes a triangle a triangle and what makes a square a square.

Objective
(s)

1.G.1 Distinguish between defining attributes of triangles and squares (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided)
Students will be able to distinguish between defining attributes of triangles and squares.

Teacher
Input

Today class we are going to go over Triangles and Squares. We are going to go over what makes up a triangle and what make
up a square. I am going take this a few toothpicks and some play dough to make a shape. If I connect these three toothpicks
with the play dough can anyone tell me what shape I just made? (Triangle) Yes class that is correct. Now I am going to take fou
toothpicks and make a shape. Can anyone tell me what shape I just made? (Square) yes class that is correct!

Guided
Practice

I have put one thing of play dough and a few toothpicks on your table. I want everyone to take a pinch of play dough and 4
toothpicks. We are going to practice building different shapes with these materials today.
I want everyone to first make a small triangle. (walk around the class looking and helping). Once everyone has a triangle made
ask the class to describe the attributes of the triangle. (3 sides, 3 points) . Now have them build a bigger triangle using two
more toothpicks. Explain that the overall size doesnt change the fact that it is a triangle. Have them describe that triangle.
Now I want everyone to make a square (Walk around looking and helping) Once everyone has made the square ask the class
describe what makes a square. (4 sides, closed, four corners) Then ask them how a square is different than a triangle. Now
make a bigger square using more toothpicks. Explain again that just because the overall size got bigger doesnt change the
fact that it is a square.

Independ
ent
Practice

During the independent practice I would handout a worksheet that had them circle the right shape. Ex. Circle the square with
the options being a triangle a square and a trapezoid. The bottom of the worksheet would ask them to draw a triangle and a
square. Grade the worksheet at the end.
