N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Name: Kristin Cabatingan; Date of Activity: 1/21/2020 & 3/29/2020; Faculty: Kaylyn Bautista

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with.

I participated in two separate professional activities, including completing the American

Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) program and participating in the free

online course offered by Yale, The Science of Well-Being. My role in both activities were to

learn as a student and apply the things I learned to my quality of care as a future nurse and my

everyday life.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

I received my CPR certification on January 21, 2020 after attending the three-hour, in-

person course located in Tucson, Arizona. Furthermore, I completed five hours, or three weeks,

of The Science of Well-Being online course by April 4th, 2020 (each weekly course takes about

two hours to complete). I am continuing my participation in The Science of Well-Being online

course until I finish the full 10-weeks it takes to complete it as it has given me valuable life tools.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This experience is valuable to me as I wanted to learn how to live a happier, more

fulfilling life. I have been feeling anxious with issues going on in personal life and the world in

regards to the COVID outbreak. Prior to this experience, I thought I could handle stress

efficiently, however, I quickly realized that I had more to learn. This course allowed me to

recognize my misconceptions on happiness and this realization has already made a positive

difference in my life for the better. I believe that one of the most responsible things to do is to

ensure that you care for yourself well, so you are able to properly care for others. Therefore, this

experience is extremely valuable to me.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
Prioritizing happiness and well-being has been one of, if not the highest, personal goal in

life. I have been a long-term believer that, in order to properly take care of others, an individual

must first take care of themselves. This goes hand in hand with the quote, “Love yourself before

you love others.” I used to think that putting myself before others seemed inherently selfish,

however, I slowly realized that this principle holds true. By taking care of yourself first, you are

open to caring for your patients from a place of wholeness, and are more capable of truly

connecting with your patients. It allows you to efficiently overcome adversities and challenges,

so that you can readily provide the best possible care that each and every patient deserves. By

utilizing the tools and experiences that the Science of Well-being online course taught me, I am

able to incorporate activities of wellness and happiness into my life. This will allow me to

readily and fully provide quality care to my future patients. Furthermore, the BLS training I

completed allows me to provide CPR to patients in the hospital, or outside of the hospital,

whenever needed.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future;

why or why not? (Describe)

I would recommend both these professional activities. The BLS training allows you to

obtain your CPR certification, which is required for all nurses to obtain. I also highly recommend

The Science of Well-Being online course as I found that the experiences I gained and knowledge

I earned to be extremely valuable in my everyday life. It allows individuals to acknowledge their

misconceptions on happiness and develop the right practices to achieve wellness. It is grounded

in evidence-based practices and information, and is highly beneficial for an individual’s life.
