Philosophy
The
of Les Mills Born to Move TM

We want to inspire Les Mills BORN TO MOVE™

children to develop classes are where
a lifelong love of children fall in love
movement. with movement.
Children aren’t as physical as
they used to be. We know the
facts about obesity and sedentary
lifestyles, and this stuff is scary...
So here is our chance to be BRAVE. If we can get children hooked
on movement, we are literally saving their precious lives.
Let’s provide a place for them to be safe, active and learn basic
foundation movement skills: running, jumping, finding a beat and
dancing to it, punching, kicking, balancing, or just resting on the
floor.
Young humans do all of this instinctively, but as we age, we are
educated out of our bodies and find ourselves stuck at a desk, or
in front of the TV. LES MILLS BORN TO MOVE™ brings awesome
music that children love, and teaches children that they do not have
to lead a sedentary lifestyle. In fact, the magic they experience
within one of our classes is going to set them up for a fit, fun-
fuelled, happy and healthy life.
Great music is a critical part of the package that encourages
children to return every week. And they won’t come back if it’s not
cool. That’s why we work with teenagers (hardest people on the
planet to please) to come up with music lists that they and their
friends are listening to right now.
We want children to WANT to come to these classes…to feel a
sense of ownership, a sense of place–where it just feels right for
them and their friends. Our classes are specifically age appropriate
both musically and developmentally, so children can relax and
have fun.

Teaching LesTM Mills
Born to Move
At its very heart Les Mills BORN TO MOVE™
is about children, All children. You need
an authentic respect and love for each child in your
class and an appreciation for the unique perspective they bring.
For children to be interested enough
to get actively involved, they need The most respectful thing you can do as teacher is To
to feel totally comfortable with you praise effort, encourage
as a teacher. They need you to be a
strong, compassionate leader.
participation and let the children see

behaviour and achievement. The environment
you set up in class, the emotional comfort you
provide and the quality of your communication
have the power to enable or disable optimal
learning for the individual children in your class.
Teachers have enormous power to build
confidence, or with a few careless words or
actions, to destroy it. You help shape a child’s
view of themselves: treat them as important and
capable.
We care about each of the children from the
moment we first see them to the moment the
last one leaves. LES MILLS BORN TO MOVE™
classes are not performances with start and
end points. They are shared learning and fun
experiences where the interest you express in the
children and your willingness to involve them and
have them contribute will hugely increase your
chance of inspiring them to have a lifelong love
of movement.
CLass Format
Each class begins as soon as you enter
the club and see children getting ready to come and
join you. Use this simple 5 step-format below to make sure
that you deliver on the essence of each LES MILLS Born to
move™ class:
1. Arrival
Greet children as they arrive.

2. welcome circle
Introduce yourself, share a story, ask how they can remain safe and
agree on safety conditions, ask them who is leading the class today.

3. Music and moves

Follow age appropriate choreography and format.

4. relaxation
2-5mins where the children can lie down silently to rest and breathe.

5. say goodbye
Stand by the door and say goodbye to each child.

Child Centred
teaching Model
BE
Attitude & authenticity
Start with love. You need an authentic interest in children and their learning. Show a
deep-rooted respect for every child as an individual while teaching the whole group.
Be yourself. Smile and be present. Children spot a phoney from a mile away. Use
your own natural language when you talk with the children. Combine your body, face
and voice and put yourself into the feeling of each track. Respect for the children
comes from the importance of the moves. It is serious for them and fun.

Child-Centred Age-appropriate energy

Energy
Understand how to connect energetically with different ages and adjust your vibe to
the needs of the children.

Sparkle
You are a firework. Be switched on for the entire experience from the time the first
child enters the room until the very last child leaves. Shine bright.

LEAD
Call it what it is
Walk, jump, run, bounce, kick, step, punch & hop. Call moves by describing what
they are. Use simple counts to coach the rhythm: 3,2,1 jump or step, step, step, jump.
Optional: Give one technical or focus point per move or sequence.

Question with purpose

Ask a question with the track purpose in mind "Can you travel even further this

Child-Centred
time" or recal your focus point. Focus on the feel of the movement "Can you feel
it in your legs?".

play

Coaching Sing, create a theme, use visualisation and imagery, set a personal challenge,
encourage participation, create confidence "You've got this!", "You can't get this
wrong". Be Playful, laugh, smile, play tricks. Keep all your messages about physical
activity positive. Praise involvement and have FUN!

watch
Look at the children all the time to maintain their attention. SMILE. Watch and

INTERACT
notice what’s going on for the children. Understand how to read their signals.
Look for signs of boredom and disengagement so you can take action.

adapt
Keep the class dynamic and enjoyable for every child. Act quickly to maintain
energy and engagment. For the younger classes you can go back to the

Child-Centred
start of the track or excite them by telling them what is coming next. For the
older clasees you can play a game, change the use of the room or move to
the next track.

Learning Respond
Nip any potential issues in the bud by quickly responding to what you see
happening in the room. You need to blow out the match, not fight with fire! Show
you are in charge, and follow-up on the boundaries you have set so children
know that you respect their learning and desire to have fun. Redirect or divert
children who are not engaged.

THEMED MOVEMENTS

PLAYFUL
CHARACTER ROLE PLAY

5 blocks of fully choreographed dance movements.

Use imagery to enhance the imaginative experience.
Children sing-along with the songs which helps them
learn the choreography.
Children of this age are primarily visual learners so your
role as teacher is to clearly demonstrate the moves so
the children can easily copy.

11 Disco

This track uses the whole room through a variety of movements from one side/corner to the
other. Have the children do this exercise in pairs (or in 3s or 4s) – and while you show them
the moves first, the children do this on their own! Remember to wait until every child has
completed one round before introducing the next movement. After a few rounds reverse the
group so the children at the back become the ‘leaders’.

Try:
 Skipping
 Step-touch and Skip
 Skip and Back-tap
 Skip Heel and Heel dig

13 You Don’t Have To Answer Yes
2.55 mins

For this track you don’t have to use the whole song! Simply let the children dance around
the room with scarves and then pause the music and give them an instruction (i.e.
‘Statues’).
e.g.:
• Sit on the floor
• Stand on one leg
• Sleep on your stomach

Teaching Notes

Track purpose
Find ‘statues that might challenge
balance, core, or creativity. Let the
children dance freely in the studio (and
if they start running around so pause
pause music more often!)

Question with purpose

Can you help me find a new statue
today?

U se of room
Get the kids to use the entire room –
