CATEGORIZATION OF DEAD

BODY

Category 1 (BLUE label)

All dead bodies other than those with infectious diseases


as listed under Category 2 & 3 PPE: water repellent gown
surgical mask goggles or face shield (if there may be splashes)
gloves Advice: viewing on funeral parlor, embalming, hygienic
preparation allowed.

Category 2 (YELLOW label)

HIV, Hepatitis C, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease without necropsy,


SARS, Avian Influenza, MERS, other infectious diseases as advised
by the physician. PPE: like those of Category 1 plus plastic apron
The dead body should be placed in a body bag, which should be
zippered closed. A second layer of cover is required. The outside of
the body bag should be wiped with 1:4 diluted household bleach and
allow to airdry. Advice: embalming is not allowed, cremation is
advisable.

Category 3 (RED label)

Anthrax, Plague, Rabies, Viral hemorragic fever, Creutzfeldt-


Jakob Disease with necropsy, other infectious diseases as advised
by the physician PPE: water resistant gown, N95 respirator, goggles
or face shield, cap, long nitrile gloves/double nitrile gloves, full
length shoe covers The dead body should be placed in a body bag,
which should be zippered closed. A second layer of cover is
required. The outside of the bag should be wiped with 1:4 diluted
household bleach and allow to airdry. Advice: no viewing, no
embalming, no hygienic preparation. Cremation is strongly
advisable.
