first tour there and I was determined to conquer the conditions. At one
time, I’d get upset with what the media would say or write. But I have
realised it’s better to focus on your own game and keep working on it.”
Despite being a modern-day cricketer who is very active on social
media, Dhawan hasn’t mastered—or has chosen not to concentrate
too heavily on—the art of ‘marketing’ himself. His fine achievements
are still underplayed by the man himself, as well as the sports media
in general. In South Africa, for instance, Dhawan scored a century in
his 100th ODI, a feat which was the first of its kind in Indian cricket.
Only Hashim Amla has scored more runs than the Delhi player in his
fi rst 100 ODIs. “It was my dream to perform on the tougher pitches
of South Africa. I was happy with my show, since I have been in good Known among teammates as ‘Gabbar’,

my game, and my experience is helping me sort out my weaknesses,”

formula is to stay longer at the crease and the runs
will come. Indeed, it’s a very nice feeling when I
am told that my numbers are as good as Virat’s or
Rohit’s in those conditions. It has always been a big
challenge for sub-continental batsmen to dominate
outside Asia, and I am glad that we have been doing
that consistently.”
Known among teammates as ‘Gabbar’, Dhawan
is already among the top 15 run-getters of all time
for India, and only Mahendra Singh Dhoni (51)
and Kohli (58.10) have better averages than his, at
45.90. And his partnership with Rohit Sharma is
in the same league as the Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav
Ganguly jugalbandi. “I have a great understanding
with Rohit. However, as sportspersons, we always
have had a healthy competition to do better than the
other. And, it’s not just Rohit—I also get inspiration
from Lokesh [K.L.] Rahul. If I am not in form and
they are doing well for the team, I’m very happy for
them,” says Dhawan.
And while Dhawan is undoubtedly one of the fin-
est ODI openers of all time for India, his Test record
is not that bad either, in spite of appearances. Very
few pay notice to the fact that he has also scored six
tons in 29 matches. Last year, he was dramatically
recalled into the Test team (after Murali Vijay was

injured in Sri Lanka), and he grabbed the opportu-

nity with both hands. “I hope I can play 100 Tests
for India, like I have played 100 ODIs. I don’t know
what will happen in the next five years, but my aim
and ambition is to remain fit and play as many games
in that format, too,” says Dhawan in a philosophi-
cal tone. Before his twin failures in the first Test in
South Africa, he had two hundreds and two fifties
in his last eight innings, after his recall in July 2017.

It is difficult not to agree that the IPL is
an advantage. The kind of financial stabil-
ity it provides at a young age is unparal-
leled in Indian sport. For less than 10 first-
class matches every season, a youngster
needs to slog for eight months while the
IPL gives you everything in less than eight
weeks. After all, not everyone is desper-
ate to play for India as was the case for the
previous generation.

“Coping with the rigours of IPL and se-

be physically stronger and more mature
and it’s a different challenge altogether,”
adds Prasad.
It appears that grooming the U-19 boys
appropriately for the senior level is the
biggest challenge of Indian cricket. There
is no dearth of talent, as evident from In-
dia’s spectacular show in recent editions,
but players need to be treated differently.
While someone like Shaw looks mature
and ahead of his peers, others like wicket-
keeper Desai will take a while to graduate.
Former India player Sanjay Manjrekar
