How to file an FIR: A complete

guide
Here's how to file an FIR online as well as offline.

FIR in simple words is known as the (First Information Report). The


procedure for filing an FIR is mentioned under Section 154 of the
Criminal Procedure Code, 1973. You can file the FIR at any police
station. You do not necessarily have to be in that area particular area
where the crime has been committed. But, try to visit a nearest police
station as the FIR has to be filled immediately without any delay.
Who can file an FIR? Anyone, a victim of a crime, a person who has
witnessed a crime or who has information about the crime can file an
FIR.
How to file a complain:
Step 1: Visit the nearest police station and describe all the details to
the police whatever you know.
Step 2: You can either verbally tell the police officer about the
incident, for instance, what happened? How do you know? Or, write
down the details by yourself.
Step 3: If you tell the police verbally, then the duty officer must write
it down and then make an entry in the General Diary or Daily Diary.
Step 4: If you submit a written complaint then you must carry two
copies. One for the duty officer and the other one will be returned to
you.)
Step 5: The police will go through all the details once you submit the
information.
Step 6: After that, the information recorded by the police is read over
to you.
Step 7: You need to sign the FIR, once the information has been
recorded by the police.

recorded by the police is as per the details given by you.

Step 9: A free copy of FIR will be given to you with an FIR number,
date of FIR and the name of the police station.
Make sure that both the copies must be stamped. The stamp on the
FIR bears a DD Number or Daily Diary Number. It is a proof that they
received your complaint. In case you lose your copy, you can use these
details to access the FIR online for free.
FIR details cannot be changed:
Once you register an FIR, the contents of the FIR cannot be changed.
On the other hand, you can give additional information to the police
later on at any point.

How file an FIR online

Now, you can file a First Information Report (FIR) or a complaint online,
as well. But, there is a limitation, only certain kinds of FIR and
complaints can be registered online in some cities.
You can file an e-FIR for cognizable offenses which include rape,
kidnapping, murder, death related to dowry among others. In such
cases, the police can make necessary arrests and detainment's even
without the order of the court. But in the cases of non-cognizable
offenses such as cheating, stalking, and assault, a mere complaint can
be filed online instead of a FIR. Such types of complaints can be later
escalated into an FIR with the police, only after seeking necessary
permissions from the local magistrate.
How to file an FIR online in Delhi:
Step 1: Visit the Delhi Police Official Website.
Step 2: Select 'Services' may option will scroll down.
Step 3: Choose the option complaints if you want to file a police
complaint online, from the online service box.
Step 4: File FIR/complaint accordingly.
Step 5: After you submit your complaint, you will receive a copy of
your e-FIR in PDF form in email-ID. Take a print out of that report. You
have to fill up the your personal details while filing an FIR. The
following options will be there-
 Enter the complainant's name- fill the name of the person who
wants to lodge the E-FIR.
 Enter the father's/mother's name- fill the complainant's parents'
name.
 Enter the complainant's Address- enter the full address.
 Enter complainant's Mobile number- complainant's working
mobile number.
 Enter complainant's email ID- Email-ID is important because a
copy of your e-FIR will be sent to you via email for verification.
