WÄRTSILÄ STERNGUARD

The Wärtsilä Sternguard range has the widest selection of standard oil lubricated lip and face type sealing solutions. The majority of the different
executions are suitable for stern tubes. The Sternguard range can also be adapted for thrusters and electric pods.

Stern tube seal

Oil lubricated outboard (OLS3-P and OLS4-P) and inboard (OLS2-P) stern tube lip type seals
consist of the following key components: casing set, high wear resistant seal rings and liner.
The seal rings are made of Viton® rubber. The liner provides a running surface for the seal
rings and protects the propeller shaft from wear.
Although as standard, they are partially split cost efficient solutions, they are also available OLS2-P
in a fully split option providing the possibility to perform retrofits without removing any
components in the shaft line.

Thruster seal
The oil lubricated (OLS3-P and OLS4-P) lip type seal is also applicable for thruster seal
solutions.

WÄRTSILÄ OCEANGUARD

Wärtsilä Oceanguard is an oil lubricated face type sealing solution available for stern tubes, thrusters, electric pods and tidal turbines. Wärtsilä
Oceanguard seals offer anti-pollution and abrasion resistance.

Cruise, ferry and offshore stern tube, thruster and electric pod face type seal
OFS3H-P, OFS3H-N-D and OFS3H-P-D

The Wärtsilä Oceanguard product range contains several variants but all share the same
fundamental sealing configuration. The unique design uses a face type seal in the sea water
and lip seals to operate in the stern tube oil.
The standard (OFS3H-P) seal contains a void space between the water and oil interfaces to
provide a separation that enables monitor and draining. This prevents any contamination of the
oil system with sea water and vice versa.
In certain thruster applications pressure compensation is included to comply with pressure
pulsing through increased shaft movements.

with the specific demands of tidal turbines.
This seal has unparalleled performance in high pressure and
low rotational speed operating environments synonymous with turbine installations.

WÄRTSILÄ AIRGUARD

Wärtsilä Airguard is an oil lubricated outboard lip type sealing solution. The lip seals are pressurized with an air system to reduce the stress and
wear, via controlled pressure differentials across the lip chambers. They are anti-pollution seals suitable for stern tubes and thrusters.

OLS3A-P and OLS4A-P

Oil lubricated outboard (OLS3A-P and OLS4A-P) stern tube lip type seals consist of the
following key components: casing set, high wear resistant seal rings and liner. The seal rings
are made of Viton® rubber. The liner provides a running surface for the seal rings and protects
the propeller shaft from wear.
Although as standard, they are partially split solutions, they are also available as fully split
providing the possibility to remove and replace without disturbing any components in the shaft

The Wärtsilä Sandguard range is an abrasion resistant, oil lubricated outboard stern tube lip type sealing solution. Anti-pollution options are also
available similar to the Wärtsilä Airguard range.

OLS3W-P, OLS4W-P, OLS3AW-P and OLS4AW-P

The Wärtsilä Sandguard oil lubricated outboard (OLS3W-P, OLS4W-P, OLS3AW-P and
OLS4AW-P) stern tube lip type seals are specially designed for dirty water conditions. They
consist of the following key components: casing set, high wear resistant seal rings and liner. The
seal rings are made of Viton® rubber. The liner provides a running surface for the seal rings and
protects the propeller shaft from wear. OLS3W-P OLS4W-P
Although as standard, they are partially split solutions, they are also available as fully split providing
the possibility to remove and replace without disturbing any components in the shaft line.
Fresh water is supplied to the seawater chamber to ensure all sea particles/debris is cleared
from the dynamic seal ring interfaces, providing protection and longevity of the seal.

The Wärtsilä Enviroguard range is an environmentally friendly inboard sealing solution. These products are suitable for both blue water and abrasive
water conditions. Available in both metallic and composite materials.

SMALL RANGE
Commercial and military open water lubricated stern tube face type seals
WFS1R-F, WFS1R-P and WFS1R-P-L

Wärtsilä Enviroguard seals (WFS1R-F, WFS1R-P and WFS1R-P-L) are suitable for smaller
vessels such as patrol and coastal vessels.
The small range Enviroguard has a long track record of outstanding performance in all water
conditions. This seal type comprises of hard running interfaces for abrasion resistance and can WFS1R-P
be adapted for shock capability.
Partially and fully split options are available to enable maintenance and seal replacement
without removing the shaft. Maintenance can also be done afloat through the use of an
inflatable seal. Main components are manufactured from proven, metallic or corrosion free
composite materials for easy maintenance and reduced weight.

The large range Enviroguard has a long track record of outstanding performance in all water
conditions. This seal type comprises of an omega bellows arrangement for increased radial and
axial shaft movements. The seal can also be adapted for shock capability and is fitted to many
navies and cruise ships throughout the world.
Partially and fully split options are available to enable maintenance and seal replacement WFS1O-P-M
without removing the shaft. Maintenance can also be done afloat through the use of an
inflatable seal. Additional packing assembly is also available for the additional redundancy
required for military applications.

This seal type comprises of helical spring loaded interfaces suitable for abrasion resistance.

manufactured from corrosion free, proven composite materials for easy maintenance and
reduced weight.

The Wärtsilä Iceguard range is an environmentally friendly, water lubricated stern tube sealing solution. The Iceguard face type seals are suitable for
stern tubes operating in vessels with enclosed water lubricated stern tube systems. Typical applications include vessels operating in Arctic conditions
or in environmentally sensitive areas.

Closed water lubricated stern tube face type seals

WFS1O-P-MY and WFS1O-P-MX

Based on the well proven Wärtsilä Enviroguard seal range, the Iceguard offers a high
performance stern tube sealing solution. Wärtsilä Iceguard seals (WFS1O-P-MY and WFS1O-
P-MX) are suitable for ice breakers and vessels operating in harsh water conditions.
This seal type comprises of an omega bellows arrangement for increased radial and axial
shaft movements.
Suitable for closed water systems containing anti-freeze additives and adapted for shock WFS1O-P-MX
load capabilities in ice if required. Partially split seal enabling maintenance without removing
the shaft. Maintenance can also be done afloat on the forward seal through the use of an
inflatable seal.

The Wärtsilä Jetguard range consists of water lubricated face type sealing solutions, especially designed for waterjet input shafts. Available in both
metallic and composite materials.

Commercial and military waterjet face type seals

WFS1R-P-J, WFS1R-P-LJ, WFS1R-P-M and WFS1R-F-M

The Wärtsilä Jetguard seal is specifically developed for demanding operating conditions, such
as the high speeds and varying pressures typically seen on waterjets. It is available as both
commercial and military (shock capable) options.
Partially and fully split options are available to enable maintenance and seal replacement
WFS1R-P-J
without removing the shaft. Maintenance can also be done afloat through the use of an
inflatable seal.
Main components of the commercial types (WFS1R-P-J and WFS1R-P-LJ) are manufactured
from bronze. Corrosion free composite materials are also available for easy maintenance and
reduced weight.
The military type (WFS1R-P-M and WFS1R-F-M) is largely of aluminium and bronze WFS1R-P-M
construction with OD pressurized interfaces.

The Wärtsilä Floodguard range has a long track record of performance in both military and
commercial applications.
Should the vessel experience a flooded compartment, the self-activating Floodguard seal

The Wärtsilä Diveguard range is a high pressure inboard sealing solution for submarines and other deepwater applications. They are water
lubricated face type seals available in either single barrier or double barrier options.

High pressure military and commercial face type seals

WFS1H-P-M and WFS2H-P-M

Commonly supplied as a bespoke design solution for the most demanding subsea applications,
these seals offer exceptional performance in both military and commercial vessels.
Benefits of the seal range include low noise, long life and additional redundancy options. These
include high pressure inflatable seals (allowing high pressure testing), optional emergency WFS1H-P-M
packing (standard and planetary gearing options) and flow restrictors.

WÄRTSILÄ STEERGUARD

The Wärtsilä Steerguard range is a compilation of rudder stock and stabilizer sealing solutions available for various lubrication types. The lip type
rudder stock seals are oil lubricated whereas the face type seals are available with either grease or water lubrication.

KLR2-P and KLR3-P

The KLR2-P and KLR3-P seals are specifically designed for sealing the rudder stock. They
consist of the following key components: casing set and seal rings. The seal rings are made
of NBR rubber while the casing set is constructed from high-grade cast iron. The seals require
minimal maintenance, and can be easily overhauled in-situ. This seal is an efficient and cost
effective rudder stock solution.

The spherical self-aligning design promotes easy alignment, and reduces wear. The designs
are also prepared for cooling and can be fitted with complete monitoring of temperatures and

The OPSQ-F-X is modified for higher shaft loads.

 WÄRTSILÄ THRUST BEARINGS

The thrust bearing solutions are single collar, self-aligning thrust bearings. They are designed with two faces of tilting pads on pivots.

OBSY-F and OBSQ-F

Wärtsilä thrust bearings (OBSY-F and OBSQ-F) transmit the thrust from the shaft to the bearing
housing which minimizes the tilting effect with the benefit of low stress levels. The standard is
for axial loads only and there is an option for axial and radial loading.
The oil circulating and cooling system is available either as a self-lubricating system with
integrated cooler or as external pump and cooler unit.
Fitted with complete remote monitoring of the temperatures and oil flow, the thrust bearing
solutions enables easy management of the product.

Generator bearing solutions are self-aligning bearings with housings made of cast iron with centrifugally cast tin based white metal bearing

OGSP-F, OGSS-F and OGSC-F

Wärtsilä’s generator bearings can all be fitted with complete remote monitoring of the
temperatures and oil flow.
Depending on the intended installation, the bearings can be altered to support both axial and
radial loads. All bearing designs offer a variety of lubrication and cooling to ensure that the
bearings are fully prepared for its application.
OGSP-F is a generator bearing designed according to DIN 31690 adapted for being fixated to
a platform. OGSS-F is designed according to DIN 31693 and has a laterally positioned flange
and the OGSC-F has a flange in the middle of the bearing designed according to DIN 31694.

Wärtsilä stern tube solutions are ready-to-install stern tubes as standard, but can be custom designed to fit the specific vessel and is assembled to
the hull construction by means of resin chocking. The solutions are designed to meet each customer requirement and specification.

OT and WT-M

The Wärtsilä standard stern tube assemblies are fitted with centrifugally cast white metal
bearings or composite bearings depending on the application or lubricating medium.
The solution encourages a fit-and-forget concept as bearings and all additional items are
already fitted and installed upon delivery. The installation and alignment is a simple and swift OT
procedure when compared to older traditional methods, allowing for significant reduction in
installation time and resources.

Commercial oil lubricated hydraulic nuts

Hydraulic nuts for heavy equipment installation. Manufactured from high quality materials, the
nuts are designed for use as both an installation tool and a permanent nut. The fitting process

Wärtsilä water quality systems are designed to provide filtered water for open and closed lubricated stern tube systems, providing impressive
longevity of installed equipment.
WYS-M, WYS-MX and WQS-M

Wärtsilä water quality systems increase the life of both seal and bearing products by filtering
the water supply to required standards. A range of pumped and/or filtered supply systems for
open and closed water applications are available:

Open water filtration systems WYS-M
