MADISON PHYSICAL EDUCATION

GOAL: The goal of our Physical Education course is to have students take a
greater ownership of their physical fitness and promote the discovery of activities suited
to their individual interest. We want to encourage active, healthy lifestyles that persist
into the future.
UNITS: In Physical Education, we will cover both dual and team sports. Examples of
these are: badminton, pickle ball, tennis, volleyball, basketball, gym hockey, flag
football, disc golf, and soccer. We will also complete a unit on health and nutrition
through the Bienestar Health workshop. The state requires us to complete a Fitness
Gram test in which we will measure fitness levels related to strength, endurance, and
flexibility.
GRADING: Your grade will be determined by daily activities, homework and quizzes,
which will account for 70 % of your grade. The other 30 % will be written evaluations
and skills tests.
PE UNIFORMS: It is required that you suit out each day in a gray shirt and gray shorts.
Blue shorts or black shorts are also acceptable. Your first and last name should be on
the top left of your shirt and lower left portion of the shorts. This is a MUST!! It can be
written in permanent marker or can be monogrammed. It doesn’t matter what color the
monogram is. Places you can buy these PE uniforms include: Halftime Sports, Athletic
Supply, The Monogrammer, Cattillac Style. It is also required that you wear athletic
shoes for PE. Flip flops, boots, house shoes, or tennis shoes that don’t tie are not
appropriate for Physical Education. All jewelry must be removed for PE. This is a
safety issue.
DRESSING OUT: It is mandatory that each student dress out everyday. If a student is
excused from PE because of a doctor’s note or parent note, he/she must still dress out.
The teacher will give that student an alternate assignment (written report or activity from
a workbook).
LOCKS/LOCKER ROOM: Each student will be issued an individual locker with a school
issued lock. You may NOT bring your own lock!! You will be given a combination card
with your code on it. You need to memorize this code in order to open your locker each
day. It would be very helpful to practice opening a combination lock prior to the
beginning of school. Each student is responsible for their lock and locker and should
keep all belongings/valuables in the locker to prevent loss or theft. Do not share your
combination with anyone.
SUPPLIES FOR PE: GIRLS—PONY TAIL HOLDERS (KEEP EXTRAS IN YOUR
LOCKER IN A BAGGIE OR CONTAINER), ZIPLOC BAG OR TRINKET BOX TO KEEP
JEWELRY IN, DEODORANT/BODY SPRAY (NO GLASS BOTTLES), SMALL BOX OF
BAND AIDS AND ANY OTHER PERSONAL GROOMING ITEMS YOU MIGHT NEED
BOYS—DEODORANT/BODY SPRAY (NO GLASS BOTTLES)

Intramurals: We offer a FREE program to 6th grade Girls and Boys which allows
them to compete with other students here at Madison. Boys Intramurals include flag
football, basketball, and track. Girls Intramurals offer volleyball, basketball, and track.

6th Grade PreAthletics Class—This class emphasizes skill development for the
team sports that are offered at the middle school level (Basketball, Volleyball, Football,
and Soccer). You must choose this option on your Choice of Subjects sheet. This is
for those who are sports oriented and plan on participating in Athletics during 7 th grade.
