STRESS ANALYSIS EXAMPLES

THERMAL LOAD ON PIPING CONNECTED TO PUMP NOZZLES

1. Calculate the allowable force on the pump: (10” pump nozzle)

X (200) = 2,000 lb maximum force allowed.
2. Calculate the expansion in the north-south direction : The
15ft 6” leg is the only run in the north south direction. Use thermal
growth table 16-15. (15ft6in) X (0.046) = 0.713 in expansion.
3. Calculate the total absorbing legs that are 90degree to the
15ft 6” leg: These legs are in the east-west leg (11ft) plus the
vertical leg (7ft3”). Due to the rigid valves and nozzles in the
system, neglect the 6’8” vertical leg. Total available absorbing legs
= 11’ + 7’3” = 18’3”.
4. Apply the nomograph shown in 16-17 to determine if the
absorbing leg required is less than the total available
absorbing legs determined earlier. Refer to the circled
numbers on the chart. We get 23ft on pipe length scale as the
minimum required absorbing pipe length.
5. The available absorbing leg 18’3” is less than 23’. Therefore the
designer must add a minimum of 5ft to the vertical or east-west

direction. By adding this extra leg the designer will be within the
maximum allowable force on the pump nozzle. The 6’8” vertical leg
previously neglected may be sufficient flexibility, despite the
presence of rigid valves and nozzles.
6. Calculate the absorbing leg required for the expansion leg in the
east-west direction. The 11’ leg is the only run in the east-west
direction: 11’X0.046=0.506 in expansion and get minimum required
absorbing pipe length from nomograph as 21ft.
7. Calculate the absorbing leg required for the expansion leg in the
vertical direction. (2’9”+6’8”+7’3”+1’4”) X 0.046 = 0.828ft. From
nomograph get minimum absorbing pipe length as 25ft.

THERMAL LOAD ON PIPING CONNECTED TO OTHER EQUIPMENT.

1. Determine the amount of expansion in the north-south direction. The

distance to consider is from the anchored side of the exchanger to the
centerline of the vertical vessel. Use Fig: 16-15 thermal growth table.
(10ft) X (0.0065) + (20 ft + 5 ft) X (0.003) + (6 ft) X (0.0065) =
0.1790 in.
2. Next, determine the length of the absorbing legs. The two legs
60degree to the north-south expansion are the east-west leg (25 ft)
plus the vertical legs (80ft + 4ft). Total available absorbing legs = (25
ft) + (80 ft + 4 ft) = 109 ft.

3. Given the numbers and the known allowable of 14,000 psi for vessel
nozzles, we can now enter nomograph of fig: 16-19 and determine if
the available absorbing legs we summed earlier is sufficient. It comes
out to be 18ft.
4. Now determine the amount of expansion in the east-west direction.
The 18ft leg is the only run in the east-west direction. (25ft) X (0.003)
= 0.075 expansion. Say – 0.1in.
5. Get Minimum required absorbing pipe length as 13ft from nomograph.
6. The last step is to determine the vertical expansion and its impact on
the vessel nozzles. (20ft) X (0.046) + (30ft) X (0.027) + (25ft) X
(0.0065) – (80 ft + 4 ft) X (0.003) – (6ft) X (0.0065) = 1.6015”
expansion.
7. From nomograph we get 52 ft minimum absorbing leg. The available
absorbing leg is 20ft + 25ft + 5ft = 50ft. These absorbing legs are
smaller than the minimum required pipe length. Therefore add at least
2ft in the north-south or east-west direction to be within the maximum
allowable stress on steel equipment nozzles.
