UNIT I

1. Enumerate the most commonly used Engineering materials.

2. What is the significance of preferred numbers?

3. A shaft is required to transmit 1 MW power at 240rpm. The shaft must not twist more than 10 on
a length of 15 diameters. If the modulus of rigidity for material of the shaft is 80 GPa, find the
diameter of the shaft and shear stress induced.

4. Define fits and their significance.

5. Explain how factor of safety is adopted in designing machine elements varies with nature and
type of load imposed on them.

6. Enumerate the various phases of design.

7. Explain the manufacturing considerations in design.

8. What is standardization? Give examples of Indian standards for engineering materials.

UNIT II

1. Describe the stress concentration factor and its significance?

2. A bolt is subjected to a direct tensile load of 20KN and shear load of 15KN. Suggest suitable
size of bolt according to various theories of elastic feature, if the yield stress in simple tension
is 360 Mpa. A factor of safety of 3.5 should be used. Take poison’s ratio as 0.25.

3. Explain the factors that affect the fatigue strength.

4. A machine member is made of plain carbon steel of ultimate strength 650 N/mm2 endurance
limit of 300 N/mm2. If the member is subjected to a fluctuating torsional moment which
varies from -200 N-m to 400 N-m. Design the member using (i) Goodman’s equation and (ii)
Soderberg equation.

5. Explain endurance strength and fatigue strength.

6. State and explain various theories of failure under static loading.

7. Explain the types of fluctuating stresses.

8. Describe the methods to reduce stress concentration.

9. Explain the endurance limit modifying factors.

10. A hot rolled steel shaft is subjected to a torsional moment that varies from +350 Nm to -115
Nm and an applied bending moment at a critical section varies from 445 Nm to 225 Nm. The
shaft is of uniform cross section. Determine the required shaft diameter. The material has an
ultimate strength of 550 Mpa and yield strength of 410 Mpa. Take the endurance limit as half
the ultimate strength, factor of safety of size 2, size factor of 0.85 and a surface finish factor
of 0.62(using good man’s line)
