PARTS OF SPEECH

1. NOUN: A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing.


Examples: Akbar was a great king.
The rose smells sweet.
His courage won him honour.
The word thing includes
1. All objects that we see, hear, taste, touch or smell and
2. Something that we can think of, but cannot perceive by the senses.
2. PRONOUN: A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun.
Examples: Mohan is absent because he is ill.
Sita is a beautiful girl. She lives with her husband.
3. ADJECTIVE: An adjective is a word used to qualify a noun or pronoun.
Examples: He is rich.
He is a brave boy.
There are twenty boys in this class.
4. VERB: A verb is a word that expresses feeling, action or existence.
Examples: The girl wrote a letter to her mother.
Kolkata is a big city.
You feel sad.
5. ADVERB: An adverb is a word used to qualify a verb, an adjective or another
adverb.
Examples: He walks slowly.
He is a very good player.
He ran very fast.
6. PREPOSITION: A preposition is a word used before a noun or pronoun to show
its relation with the other words of the sentence.
Examples: The book is on the table.
The cat is under the table.
Mohan is fond of music.
7. CONJUNCTION: A conjunction is a word which joins two or more than two
words, phrases, clauses or sentences.
Examples: Vina and Sweta went to market.
I went to see him but he was not there.
Mukesh gave me a book and an inkpot.
8. INTERJECTION: An interjection is a word which expresses some sudden
feeling.
Examples: Hurrah! We have won the match.
Alas! She is dead.
PHRASE: A phrase is a group of words, which makes sense, but not complete
sense.

Examples: The sun rises in the East.

He has a chain of gold.


CLAUSE: A clause is a group of words that forms part of a sentence, and has a
subject and a predicate of its own.
Example: They rested when evening came.
PREDICATE: It is a part of a sentence containing a finite verb that makes a
statement about the subject of a verb.
Example: John went home. ( Here went home is a predicate )
