STATUS OF SNM HOSPITAL LEH AS ON 20-9-2010

The SNM hospital which was catering health care services to the whole
district of Leh got damaged on 5/6th night of August 2010 with the
result there was complete collapse of Medicare facilities in district
hospital. Areas damaged were as under:-

1. Operation theatres with full equipments.


2. Surgical/Medical/Pediatric/Eye/ENT and Gyne wards.
3. Labour room with equipments.
4. Blood Bank.
5. Laboratory wing.
6. Casualty/Emergency Block.
7. All OPD sections.
8. Investigative Blocks-CT scan/USG/X-ray Plants.
9. Tele-Medicine Unit.

In order to provide minimal possible facilities 3 rooms of Hospital


canteen were utilized for providing first Aid, 8 tents were pitched for
utilizing them for providing OPD services.

New building (F Block) ground floor of which was also filled up with
water/mud and slash , however the ist floor of the said building was
utilized for providing about 60 beds for providing IPD facilities. Since
the surgical OTs were damaged it could not be possible to under take
surgery. Therefore services of 153 Army General Hospital’s O.T was
utilized where surgeon/Gynecologist of SNM Hospital, performed
surgeries.
The team of Ministry of Health & FW had brought with them
equipments which were installed in the OT and the OT was made
functional. The equipments received from MOH are as under:-

The laboratory of the SNM hospital which was also damaged was made
functional with the equipments received from M O H. The details of
equipments received are as under:-

Ground floor of the new building (F Block) which was also filled up with
mud was got cleared/painted and made functional and which is
presently being utilized for Medical/ENT/Ophthalmology wards with a
capacity of 40 beds.

The detail of patients catered in SNM hospital after the disaster is as


under:

1. OPD.
2. IPD.
3. Deliveries conducted.
4. Surgeries.
5. Investigations.

the OPD sections were established in tents, Efforts are being made to
utilize the old OPD rooms for the patients in view of the cold being
faced by the patients for which there is there is need for repair and
restoration which is being carried out by the PWD department. Efforts
are also being made to have repair and renovation of Labour
room/Gyne ward/Neonatal Care Unit/ENT/Laboratories/Blood
Bank/Emergency/casualty/ and administrative block. Once these
repair/renovations are completed, all these departments can be made
functional in the old building complex.

Keeping in view the fact that SNM Hospital, Leh is the only referral
hospital for the district, every effort needs to be made for making at
least 3 more OTs functional with supportive investigative services. In
view of the approaching winter season, there is an immediate need of
restoration of Central Heating System which is the top most priority in
all the treatment areas both for the old and new building complex.
While undertaking the necessary repairs and renovations PWD
engineers shall also have to see the stability of the building. The list of
equipments damaged has been prepared by Medical
Superintendent /CMO Leh and in view of the short time available
because of road closure the arrangements of equipments shall have to
be made on priority so that equipment reaches Leh before closure of
