SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE


The simple Present Tense describes general facts, repeated actions and habits, and
things that are always true.
 General facts
I like milk. They speak Turkish.
Mary plays basketball. we live in Australia.
 Repeated actions and habits
Harry often arrives late. I usually get up at 7:30.
I walk to school every day. My brother usually walks with me.

The sun rises in the east. The Earth goes round the sun.

Spelling: Verbs ending in o, s, ch, sh, x add –es for the he / she / it form.

FREQUENCY ADVERBS
We often use the Present Simple with these frequency adverbs.

The frequency adverb goes between the subject and the verb.

NEGATIVE FORM
 We use do not or don’t with I, you, we and they when we make negatives
in the simple present.
 We use does not or doesn’t with he, she and it.
 We put do not / don’t and does not / doesn’t after the pronoun and before the
verb. I don’t like ice cream. She doesn’t eat chocolate.

 Use the Present Progressive to talk about things happening


now or around now. She is preparing for the Sunrise
dance.
In this photo the girl isn’t
wearing special clothes. What
are these girls doing?
 Use time expressions such as now, right now, at the moment, and these
days with the present progressive.
My sister’s preparing the food for the party at the moment.
 You can also use the present progressive to talk about
temporary situations. My brother has gotten a
summer job. He’s working in a café.
SIMPLE PRESENT

 Use the Simple Present to talk about habits, routines, and things
that are generally true. The celebration starts with a ceremony.
 Use adverbs and expressions of frequency such as always, usually, often,
sometimes, hardly ever, never or every day, once a week, twice a month
with the present simple.
They girls usually wear special clothes for the parties.
Stative Verbs
Don’t use the present progressive with stative verbs. Use the simple present.
Stative verbs often express mental states and opinions (e.g. believe, know,
remember, think, understand, forget) and preferences (e.g. hate, like, love,
need, want).
She wants a big party. (not She is wanting...)
I don’t understand what she’s saying. (not I am
not understanding…) Spelling of –ing Forms

 If a verb ends in –e, remove the final –e before adding –ing: Take – taking, use –
using
 If a verb ends in a vowel (e.g. a, i, o) and a consonant (e.g. m, p, t)
double the consonant before adding –ing: swim – swimming,
hit – hitting
 If a verb ends in –ie, change the –ie to –ying: lie – lying

We put not after was / were to make negatives. We also use the contractions wasn’t /
weren’t.

REGULAR VERBS
To form the simple past of regular verbs, add –ed to the base form.

One syllable verbs: double the final consonant.

we have to learn these forms.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE
SIMPLE PAST TENSE
 We use the Simple Past Tense to describe or to talk about finished or completed
actions or events in the past.
Felix planted his first time two months later.
 We also use Simple Past Tense to refer actions that happened at a specific time in the
past.
Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
 You often use past time phrases or expressions with the simple past.

X = The action at a specific point in the past (I went there in 2006)


When we form affirmative sentences in Simple Past Tense, we must use the verb
(regular or irregular) in simple past.
 Everybody enjoyed the party last Saturday night.
 I ate a delicious chicken sandwich two days ago.
 My mother wanted to travel abroad last year.
 We forgot our homework at home yesterday.
 It rained a lot here last January.
 He told us the truth about the problem ten minutes ago.
NEGATIVE FORM
 We use auxiliary did not or didn’t with all the personal pronouns.
 We put did not / didn’t after the pronoun and before the verb.
