Lesson 7 --- 6-6 - Multiplying Two Decimals

Reflection from prior lesson:

The review lesson went very well. During the lesson the students were engaged
and answering questions eagerly. They took a short quiz on what we reviewed. I
was hoping that all the students would get an 80% or better on the quiz but there
were about six students who scored lower than 80%. I am thinking that I will do a
small group lesson with those six students to help them understand the concepts we
reviewed and tested in the review lesson.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

5.NBT.B.7 - Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using

concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of
operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the
strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Lesson Objectives:

Students will use the standard algorithm to multiply decimals by decimals

accurately 80% of the time.

Materials Needed:

Quick Check 6-5 Projectable, White Board, dry erase marker, eraser, 6-6 packet
and slide show from the link.

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

There are about four students who have a classroom paraprofessional and have
attention issues. There are a few others who also have a hard time focusing and I
will need to keep an eye on them all the students to hopefully bring them back into
focusing on the lesson.

A.  The Lesson

1.      Introduction (20 minutes)

·   getting attention

“Come in and have a seat we are going to go over the 6-5 worksheet and then our
quiz.” (go over worksheet and quiz with students and answer questions)

(Call rows to get white boards) “Start work on today’s Quick Check. Questions 1-
3.” (Allow students time to work and then check and go over answers.)

(Hand out 6-6 packets and project the Daily Review.) “For today’s Daily Review
do questions 1, 3, and 5.” (When students finish go over the answers and answer
questions)

·   relating to past experience and/or knowledge

“Today we will multiply two decimals just like we did yesterday but with two
decimals.”

·   creating a need to know

“This is something you may need to know so that when you are making food or
doing another task you can multiply two decimals like 3.4 x 2.75 if you need to.”

·   sharing objective, in general terms

“Today we will learn how to multiply numbers like 3.4 x 2.75 or 5.1 x 3.6”

2.      Content Delivery (20 Minutes & Whole class instruction)

“Today we are going to be multiplying two decimals. When we multiply decimals

we multiply just like we always do. But when we are all done we need to place the
decimal.”

“Let’s practice multiplying two decimals and then placing the decimal.”
(Use the slide show with practice problems on it.) “9.3 x 4.1, First we multiply the
one by 3 and that’s 3, then 1 times 9 and that is nine. Now we add a zero one line
down and multiply 4 times 3 and that is 12. Carry the one. Then 9 times 4 and that
is 36 plus the 1 and that is 37. Then we add. 3 plus zero is three. 9 plus 2 is 11.
Carry the 1. Then 7 plus 1 is 8 and 3 plus 0 is three. We have the digits 3813… we
need to place the decimal. We have two digits after the decimal in the factors so we
need two after the decimal in the product so our answer would be 38.13.” (Just an
example of one of the practice problems.)

“Please turn to your reteaching in your packet.” (Go through problems 1-7 on the
reteaching as needed with the students. 1.0.2x4.6 = 0.93 - an example of one of the
problems)

3.      Closure (10-15 Min.)

“Any questions about multiplying decimals? If not then Please rip off the
reteaching and put your name on top of Practice 6-6 and that will be due
tomorrow.”

B. Assessments Used

I assess during class regularly. I will also use Practice 6-6 as an assessment.

C. Differentiated Instruction

There is an enrichment worksheet if students need more and there is also a lot of
review built into the lessons for students who are struggling.
