HTSB Standard 7: Planning for Instruction – Rationale

The artifacts that I have chosen to satisfy standard 7 are: a) lesson plan on algebraic &
verbal expressions b) behavioral support plan document c) collaboration document and d) two
pieces of student work demonstrating differentiation. Artifact a) is a lesson plan that I created for
the class curriculum of verbal and algebraic expressions. The lesson plan lists the activities
needed to create a learning experience to fulfill curriculum standards relative to the lesson. The
content standards are plainly listed to demonstrate what outcomes need to be met and how they
are relevant to my students through the lectures I can and essential question statements. Article
b) is my student’s behavioral support plan that was created in conjunction with other teachers,
parents, outside professional psychologist, and our campus behavioral health specialist, Kelly
Albrecht. This document lists my student’s strengths, behavior concerns, and proactive strategies
to help facilitate her learning. As a result, with collaboration from other professional on campus
and in the community, we were able to design a plan of action to jointly provide an appropriate
learning experience that suits the needs of my student. Evidence c) is a document that was
created in collaboration with a special needs educator, Teri Aviles. This document takes into
consideration the feedback and concerns of students in my period 1 class. For example, in-order
to plan a group activity effectively and ensure a quality learning environment, we gathered data
on who they felt most comfortable working with; whether in a group or partnered with another
peer. As a result, this document allows us to create lessons involving stations or group activities
with the appropriate personnel actively working together. Artifacts d) are two pieces of student
work relative to our lesson on ratios & proportions. The worksheets demonstrate differentiation
and scaffolding to target the strengths and needs of each student. For instance, understanding the
strengths and needs of each student allowed me to include the two levels of worksheets—2-6
Skills Practice & 2-6 Study Guide and Intervention—in my planning to ensure their learning
needs were met. Both worksheets deal with the same content; however, the worksheets are at
different levels of comprehension and skill mastery to support individual pace. The skills
practice worksheet is the on-level worksheet for students who are on pace and the study guide
and intervention worksheet differentiates with step-by-step examples and further explanations to
aid my struggling students.
