Yosra is settling in

Child/ Tamahine: Yosra. Teacher/ Kaiako: Jane. Date: 20 March/ Poutu te-Rangi 2020.

Yosra, I know being in a new environment can be difficult. Al

hamdulillah you had your Mama spend time with you in our
centre for a morning before you started. You also have your big
sister Hosna here to give you a reassuring pat from time to
time.
I have noticed that you enjoy being outside. There are so many
different toys and activities to choose from. Al hamdulillah the
weather has been warm and we have been able to give you
time to play outside almost every day. One of your favourite
outside activities is to sit in the little car. You clamber in by
yourself and contort your body until you are facing the right
way. When you have had enough you need help from a teacher
to get out.

You are learning our routines especially around

food. We always wash our hands before we eat. I
wonder if you are going to enjoy water as much as
Hosna…?! When we are in our seats we raise our
hands and we say the karakia together. In the
beginning you didn’t want to put your hands together
for dua. Now you are learning and you put your
hands together just like your teacher and your new
friends.

You are having a short sleep every day. In this photo

you have just woken up from a big sleep after a full
morning of play. You are content to lean into T Rana
as you wake up fully. You are looking around the
room and watching what all the other tamariki
(children) are doing. 5 Mar 20.
Some days you wear little shoes that squeak on each footstep. We always know where you
are, Yosra! After your first couple of weeks I noticed that you liked to be playful and stamp
your foot on the ground just to hear the squeak. You smiled and were pleased that I noticed.
This encouraged you to keep doing it.

What learning has occurred?

Your learning pathway for term one is Establishing a sense of belonging as I settle in at
preschool. You are learning the routines of our day especially around kai (food) time and
sleep times. You are developing trusting relationships with the teachers as we spend time
with you and respond to your needs. You are gaining confidence in your new environment as
you try new activities and show off your abilities to make your shoes squeak. Keep up the
good work, Yosra.

Next Steps….
We will support you as you continue to settle into preschool. Teachers will spend one on one
time with you and respond to your wants and needs to build trusting reciprocal relationships.
We will offer you different activities to learn more about you and what you enjoy.

Yosra is settled at An-Nur
Child/ Tamahine: Yosra. Teacher/ Kaiako: Jane. Date: 20 April/ Paenga-whawha 2020.

When we had morning tea you sat and

watched the other tamariki do the
actions for the song with me. I
encouraged you to join in but you
preferred to watch. Later in the same
day we did the song again and this
time you clapped your hands, raised
your arms, tried to click your fingers
and finally made reading hands. Best
of all was the beaming smile you had
on your face throughout.

Sherif was putting his hands up and down. I said ‘Allahu Akbar’ and you and Sherif and I all
raised our arms and then folded them across our chest just like we were praying. Ma
sha’allah, Yosra, what a good Muslim girl, knowing the prayer already! Mama and Baba will
be so proud of you. We recited surah al faitha and finished with Amen. That made you
happy. 10 Mar 20
I gave you some paper and felt pens. You weren’t sure what to do with them. I took the lid off
the pen and you sat holding the pen. Eventually you looked at Sherif, watched him drawing
for some time and then you copied him. He aha te tae - what colour did you use? It was red.
I asked if you would like to use another colour and offered you a new pen. You wanted to
keep using the same colour.

Your learning pathway for term one is Establishing a sense of belonging as I settle in at
preschool. You have developed confidence to join in with the other tamariki and to try new
activities. You are making links between home and pre school. This makes you feel included
and welcome in your new environment. You have learnt that you belong here and that pre
school can be FUN!! Kia kaha ki tau mahi - keep up the good work.

Next Steps….
Your learning pathway for term 2 is exploring the world around me to discover and make
sense.
