THE FOOD OF THE FUTURE: ALGAE AS AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF

PROTEIN

According to statistical analysis by 2050 the population rate will be reaching an

estimate of 10 billion as it will also take up to a 70% increase production in food to feed
those extra 2.5 billion people.

The solution utilization of algae (nanochloropsis) that doesn’t require fresh water
to flourish which contributes a great beneficial factor considering 70% of the planets
available fresh water goes towards crops and raising livestock as it also introduces
water efficiency in reusing 95% of the water in cultivating the organic matter for later
production. Subsequently it is notable that the location of growing algae is not an issue
as it cant be established even in harshness of environments such as the dessert where
as it is deemed insufficient in growing crops and has not been used until algae was
introduced that only needs a salty water aqua firm in order for it to thrive. Algae does
not only solve the potential food shortage but utilizes unused land masses in cultivating
resources since 37% of the land on this planet is dedicated to agriculture yet farm lands
grows scarce as it gives way to infrastructures such as homes, offices, amusement
parks, etc. yet algae offers an alternative to more harvests which does not require fertile
soil, the reason for the higher yield of algae than traditional crop is its availability all
year round. Despite all of the qualities that make algae an attractive crop, its algae’s
value as food is the most remarkable as a strain of algae is 40% protein and contains all
of the essential amino acids a human needs. Likewise nutrients can also be found in
meat yet it also consumes a lot of our finite resources specifically water and land. Not
just for the animals as well as their food.
